Kurt Sylvan

​I'm an associate professor at the University of Southampton. I work in epistemology (including the history of epistemology), philosophy of mind and cognitive science, and philosophy of normativity. My views are often Kantian or Kant-inspired; perhaps that's a coincidence, or perhaps it is explained by my long-standing side obsession with Kant. In epistemology, I'm interested in the nature and structure of knowledge, ways of knowing and forms of knowledge, epistemic value, epistemic normativity, epistemic reasons, epistemic rationality, and inquiry (or, more specifically, theoretical reasoning). In philosophy of mind and cognitive science, I'm interested in perception, attention, learning, memory, the nature of thinking, cognitive architecture, and the nature of neurodiversity. In philosophy of normativity, I'm interested in reasons, rationality, and reasoning in general, in 'subjective' reasons and 'structural' rationality in particular, and in the difference between theoretical and practical reasons, rationality, and reasoning. I am also interested in intersections between these three areas, and lately, especially, in the intersection of the structure of knowledge and cognitive architecture.
