In this dissertation, I demonstrate that Husserl’s theory of thing constitution underwent a development, continuing to complement and expand upon the initial theory introduced in 1907. In doing so, I seek to bare the whole picture of Husserl’s theory of thing constitution. To be more concrete, I divide the development of Husserl’s theory into three stages. First, I identify the theory of thing constitution presented in “Thing-Lecture(Dingvorlesung)”(1907), published in Thing and Space, as the early-stage theory. In this initial theory, Husserl primarily explains how the three-dimensional spatiality of a thing is constituted. Next, I identify the theory of thing constitution presented in Ideas II as the middle-stage theory. In this phase, Husserl considers that the mere constitution of the spatiality of a thing is insufficient for constituting a thing as reality(Realität), and he focuses on explaining how the causality of a thing is constituted. Finally, I identify the theory of thing constitution presented in Husserl’s writings from the late 1920s to the 1930s as the late-stage theory. In this later theory, Husserl considers that the constitution of both the spatiality and causality of a thing, as explained in previous theories, is insufficient for constituting a thing as reality. He then elucidates how the spatiality and causality of a thing are constituted in relation to the body. Furthermore, he explains the fundamental structure of the constitution of natural scientific reality(Wirklichkeit) based on his theory of thing constitution and explores practical implications of his theory. Some prior studies focusing on discussions related to Husserl’s theory of thing constitution in one of his works do not pay significant attention to the changes in his theory over time. For instance, Gail Soffer(1996) concentrates on interpreting Husserl’s concepts of perception and causality in Ideas II, while Patrick Heelan(1987) and Joseph Rouse(1987) criticize Husserl’s discussions on lifeworldly perception and natural scientific cognition(Erkenntnis) in Crisis. These studies are meaningful in that they reconstruct and critically examine Husserl’s theories within the specific works they focus on, addressing interpretive issues or providing criticism. However, I argue that these studies overlook how the theories in question relate to earlier theories or fail to consider the overall trajectory of Husserl’s intellectual project, leading to a somewhat unfair reconstruction of his theories. On the other hand, prior studies on Husserl’s theory of thing constitution generally focuses on its temporal change. For example, Iso Kern(1964) and Youngpil Kim(1994) interpret that, before the 1920s, Husserl developed his theory of thing and space constitution based on Euclidean geometry, but later, he made a clear distinction between geometrical space and the perceived lifeworld space, departing from the Euclidean framework. Namin Lee(2013) interprets that, as Husserl progresses into his later works, he moves away from the early intellectual and epistemological biases that emphasized conscious acts such as apprehension(Auffassung), and instead emphasizes the sensory, motor, and practical acts of the body, thereby developing a theory of perception similar to Merleau-Ponty’s. Kern(1964), Kim(1994), and Lee(2013) all point out the problems in Husserl’s early theory and argue that the later theory develops in a way that overcomes these issues by abandoning the framework of the early theory. This suggests a kind of rupture between the early and late theories. I will argue that such a discontinuous development, as interpreted by these scholars, does not exist. Meanwhile, Filip Mattens(2008) argues that Husserl’s thesis of the equality of touch and sight in thing constitution in Thing and Space, contradicts his thesis of primacy of touch over other senses in thing constitution in Ideas II. Mattens(2008) even attempts to demonstrate that Husserl’s thesis in Ideas II is false. In summary, Mattens(2008) aims to show that Husserl’s theory undergoes a temporal change, leading to a conflict between earlier and later theories, and thus argues that the later theory should be reasonably dismissed. In response to this criticism, Fotini Vassiliou(2017) counters that there is no conflict in Husserl’s theory, as the layers of thing constitution discussed in Thing and Space and Ideas II differ from one another. Furthermore, Vassiliou(2017) defends the thesis of the primacy of touch in Ideas II, referring to other writings like Lifeworld to support her argument. In summary, Vassiliou(2017) aims to show that, while Husserl’s theory changes over time, the earlier and later theories are harmonized within the expanded framework of the later works. The temporal changes in Husserl’s theory that I will sketch are broadly similar to those of Vassiliou(2017). In my view, the framework of the three layers of thing constitution, explicitly introduced in Ideas I, encompasses both the earlier work, Thing and Space, and later works, such as Ideas II and Crisis, and within this framework, the later theories gradually develop while incorporating the achievements of the earlier theories. However, I will show that there is a rupture in this developmental process. Contrary to the interpretations of Mattens(2008) and Vassiliou(2017), I argue that Husserl, while asserting the equality of touch and sight in thing constitution in Ideas II, began to assert the primacy of touch in the late 1920s. This shift occurred as Husserl realized that the constitution of a thing as reality involves the body in a central role, leading him to abandon the thesis of equality. This dissertation is expected to make the following academic contributions in elucidating the development of Husserl’s theory of thing constitution. First, it clarifies the criterion for distinguishing between reality and illusion which Husserl consistently referred to in the process of complementing and expanding his earlier theory in order to provide a more advanced one, recognizing that his earlier theory was inadequate for explaining the constitution of a thing as realtity. This criterion is the harmony or appropriate connection with surrounding objects. Second, it demonstrates that, although Husserl is widely known for asserting the primacy of touch in his theory of thing constitution, in his middle-stage theory he actually asserts the equality of touch and sight; and that only in his late-stage theory does he assert the primacy of touch. This indicates that, in the process of developing his theory of thing constitution, Husserl introduced a kind of rupture between the middle and late stages. Third, it shows that the results of contemporary scientific experiments which are used to criticize Husserl’s theory, in fact align with his theory, while also using modern technologies as metaphors to aid in the understanding of his theory.
