For my senior project, I am developing a Deweyan pragmatist account of animal liberation that draws on Wittgenstein, Cora Diamond, Marxist philosophy, and Aph and Syl Ko. This project centers on the following question: How are our moral standards shaped by our use of language, habits, and the systems we have created, and how does this impact the solutions to speciesism? I argue that if morality is socially mediated and upheld by habits, then the words we use and their social connotations influence our moral conceptions. This then influences the creation of our systems, like capitalism, and means that investigating the problem of speciesism necessitates examining our habits, use of language, and intersecting moral problems and their root causes.
Alongside my academic work, I am a rapper and songwriter. My philosophical and musical interests frequently overlap around ethics, politics, class, language, and storytelling. In a way, rap gives me the ability to test philosophy by bending words and creating double entendres as a sort of language game in an attempt to convey a message or story.
I was born in Liverpool and raised in the working-class towns of Wallasey and Birkenhead, England, before moving to rural Mt. Orab, Ohio, United States, at 16. This background has inspired my interests in class, ethics, and politics, which I express through my philosophy and music. I am currently based in New York.
