If the political catastrophes of the twentieth century have made it common to evade issuing judgments, on the other hand, their importance to the dignity of politics is undeniable. However, how to issue politically valid judgments in a context where there are not sufficiently stable standards to do so? Based on this question, Hannah Arendt starts from the Kantian conceptualization of examples, as based on the Critique of the faculty of judgment, to identify the importance of exemplary validity both for the life of the spirit and for the preservation of the vita activa. In this context, the objective of this article is to discuss Arendt’s analysis of the examples, to identify why they can be considered potent links between the activities that distinguish men qua men and, therefore, have a direct impact on the way individuals decide to appear to themselves and to others.

Arendt’s reflections on the reverberations of the bureaucratic way of governing give rise to two distinct and, above all, complementary argumentative trajectories: 1) its investigation as a form of domination originating from imperialism and later used as a model of totalitarian; 2) the role of bureaucrats. Both help to understand why the bureaucracy not only survived the fall of totalitarian regimes, but also remained the organizational model of nations. At the intersection of these readings, the essay “Auschwitz on Trial” presents two types of participants in the Nazi bureaucratic apparatus: bureaucratic assassins (desk murderes) and subordinate men. In common among them was a lack of responsibility for the crimes perpetrated by the regime and thoughtlessness; however, their degree of participation in the hierarchy and their punishability in post-war trials differed greatly. In these terms, this article aims to analyze the similarities and differences between subordinate men and bureaucratic murderers. To do so, it is assumed that understanding them helps to understand bureaucracy as a form of government that makes public freedom and the free exercise of spiritual activities unfeasible.

Identificando que o discurso é um atributo essencialmente humano, fundamental para a convivência dos indivíduos e para a constituição de um espaço no qual falamos e somos ouvidos, Hannah Arendt assinalou a importância da palavra para a edificação do mundo, enquanto construção plural. Diante disso, o presente artigo pretende investigar a dimensão política da linguagem na perspectiva arendtiana. Considerando que esta temática nos fornece uma chave de leitura abrangente pela teoria política da autora, assinalaremos a intrínseca relação entre ação e discurso, em referência à pluralidade ontológica que compõe a coexistência dos homens, bem como ao nexo essencial entre o logos e o pensamento. Além disso, guiados pela hipótese de que a palavra funda a esfera pública, arrazoaremos sobre o uso antipolítico da linguagem, destacando a ideologia e a mentira na política. Nesse mesmo fio condutor, por fim, dissertaremos acerca da relevância da língua materna para o compartilhar-o-mundo, corroborando com a perspectiva da autora que este espaço plural somente é possível quando possa ser tomado como objeto de discurso.

The article aims to identify as the main passions that run through the Hobbesian theoretical corpus. To this end, the exhibition will begin by analyzing the mechanism of the passions founded by the author. Next, it will be highlighted how unbridled passions make peaceful coexistence between individuals unfeasible, establishing a scenario in which conflicts are inevitable. Two passions will be analyzed in more detail: vainglory and fear. After emphasizing that the Hobbesian man tends naturally to his own benefit, to competition and to domination, representing a threat to the other, it will be pointed out how the State asserts itself as the necessary that aims to discipline like passions. This part of the argument will analyze as desirable passions for the maintenance of civil life, with emphasis on hope, the desire for comfort and delight, the desire for knowledge and the arts, as well as for fear and vainglory itself.

O presente artigo analisa a leitura de Hannah Arendt sobre os textos de Franz Kafka, o que será feito a partir do prefácio de Entre o passado e o futuro, dos ensaios Franz Kafka: uma reavaliação e O judeu como pária: uma tradição oculta, além das narrativas kafkianas Descrição de uma luta, O Processo, O Castelo e da parábola Ele, identificando tanto o que as vincula como o definhamento do humano retratado pelo escritor. Porquanto o absurdo que reveste o cenário descrito por Kafka é percebido por Arendt como um presságio dos horrores praticados pelos regimes totalitários, nossa hipótese é que discutir a leitura da autora sobre os textos kafkianos auxilia a compreensão sobre as consequências desastrosas que as relações sociais podem acarretar e a desfiguração fomentada pela burocracia como aparelho organizacional e forma de governo que normaliza os procedimentos de rotina, os massacres administrativos, a obediência cadavérica e os processos infindáveis baseados em legislações superiores, utilizados como meios de gerir indivíduos desarraigados, indistinguíveis e massificados.
