In recent years, photographs and visualisations of glacier retreat have become emblematic images of climate change and its ecological consequences. This paper presents glacier photography as a subtype of environmental photography. I argue that photographs and photographic projects that focus on glacial retreat are best conceived not only as strategies for proving climate change or as visual rhetoric for social transformation, but also as a practice that potentially plays an integral role in dealing and coping with human-induced environmental loss. To this end, I draw on praxeological accounts in theory of photography and philosophy of art as well as some exemplary photographic projects to develop a framework to analyse glacier photography. With the help of this praxeological framework, multiple orientations in glacier photography are identified: epistemic, aesthetic, emotional and evocative, social, ethical, and political orientations. All these photographic orientations, I argue, point in their own way to the process and consequences of glacial disappearance and loss. The framework presented innovatively brings together scholarship on climate change visualisation, imagery and art, the theory of photography, and philosophical aesthetics.

Do minds and ideas connect, interact, or even depend on each other, and if so, how exactly do they connect and interact? How should we conceive of the mode and process of minds and ideas being in a network and connected in some way, that is, being intersubjective or social? Martin Lenz's study Socializing Minds convincingly shows that, contrary to widespread opinion in philosophy of mind, at least some early modern philosophers, here Spinoza, Locke, and Hume, actually give a positive answer to the first question and present models that respond to the second question, thus addressing what Lenz proposes calling 'the contact problem' and repudiating the idea that mentalism is necessarily bound to individualism. In this comment, I focus on a detail in Lenz's reconstruction of Spinoza's 'metaphysical model' of the intersubjectivity of minds, namely the Aristotelian physical dynamism that would underlie Spinoza's idea of the interaction of minds. While I agree that Spinoza's model of interaction of minds refers to the Aristotelian conception of motion, I argue that the guiding principle in natural motion is best understood not only in terms of contrariety but also in terms of complementarity. Admittedly, my proposal goes beyond Spinoza's model of ideas in contact, and probably beyond Lenz's interpretation of that model, but it might enrich the imagination of the socialising of minds and ideas from a kinetic point of view, which, at least as I understand it, is precisely what Spinoza and Lenz thrive on.

This commentary considers the typology and conceptual and normative heuristic framework as proposed by the authors as a valuable contribution to the new field of philosophy of biomimetics and to the growing demand for critical evaluation of technology and design (decisions) in terms of ecological sustainability. However, further steps are needed to develop a more comprehensive normative analysis and evaluation. To inspire these efforts, I outline some additional normative dimensions of what I propose to call the ‘eco-normative profiling’ of technologies and design.

Healthcare provision, like many other sectors of society, is undergoing major changes due to the increased use of data-driven methods and technologies. This increased reliance on big data in medicine can lead to shifts in the norms that guide healthcare providers and patients. Continuous critical normative reflection is called for to track such potential changes. This article presents the results of an interview-based study with 20 German and Swiss experts from the fields of medicine, life science research, informatics and humanities of digitalisation. The aim of the study was to explore expert opinions regarding current challenges and opportunities related to data-driven medicine and medical research and to provide a methodological framework for empirically grounded, continuous normative reflection. To this end, we developed a heuristic tool to map and structure empirical findings for normative analysis. Using this tool, our interview material points to a polarisation between individualistic and collectivistic orientated argumentations among experts. The study shows that a multilevel analysis is required to deal with complex normative implications of data-driven approaches in medical research and healthcare.

Wollte man die neuzeitlichen, modernen und poststrukturalistischen Subjektkonzeptionen der Philosophie, der politischen Theorie und Sozialtheorie auf einem Spektrum anordnen, das seinen Bogen von einem apriorisch-transzendentalen Subjekt zu einer Konzeption von Subjekt als ‚Produkt‘ sozialer Praktiken und Diskurse oder als Teil der Selbstbewegung der Welt aufspannt, nähme die neumaterialistische Subjektkonzeption von Karen Barad, Quantenphysikerin und Professorin für Feminist Studies, Philosophy, and History of Consciousness, eine Extremposition ein. Das Subjekt wird im Rahmen ihrer materialistischen Metaphysik als Moment des Werdens der Welt, als instabiles Produkt der Praktiken (‚Intra-Aktion‘) der Materie vorgestellt. Indem das Subjekt nicht mehr und nicht weniger als ein Moment des Werdens der Welt konzipiert ist, stellt Barad die Denkfigur des autonomen Subjekts und die diskursiven und philosophischen Grundlagen des Subjektbegriffs selbst zur Disposition. Ohne die materialistische Metaphysik und Ethik von Barad einkaufen zu müssen, kann – so der hier eingenommene methodologische Ansatz – die materialistische Programmatik insofern gewinnbringend für eine Analyse des modernen Subjektbegriffs herangezogen werden, als dass sie den Fokus auf begriffsstrukturelle und philosophische Implikationen des Subjektbegriffs lenkt und damit in ihrer Variabilität auf besonders radikale Weise zu bedenken gibt.

In der politischen Theorie und der Theorie des Sozialen wird klassischerweise auf den Machtbegriff zurückgegriffen, wenn es darum geht, die Verbindungen und das Dazwischen der Elemente des Sozialen und des Politischenzu denken, deren Konstitution und Individuation, aber auch die Ordnung ihrer Dis‐kurse begrifflich zu erfassen. Gleichwohl ist der Machtbegriff nicht nur ein zentra‐ler Begriff in der empirischen Untersuchung und in der politischen Theorie selbst, er ist auch ein folgenschwerer Begriff sowohl auf der Ebene der Pragmatik einer Theorie als auch auf der Ebene der Theoriebildung. Denn zum einen impliziert die Kon‐zeption von Macht eine Politik qua Begriff: „[H]ow we think of power may serve toreproduce and reinforce power structures and relations, or alternatively it may chal‐lenge and subvert them.“ Zum anderen „ist der Streit um den Machtbegriff auch einStreit um die Form der politischen Theorie oder Philosophie selbst.“ Angesichtsdieser außergewöhnlichen politischen und formalen Relevanz stellt sich die Frage,wie der ‚gegenrevolutionäre‘ Theoretiker Latour, der sich für eine radikal alternativeGrundlegung der Sozialwissenschaften und der Theorie des Sozialen einsetzt, mit dem Machtbegriff umgeht. Wie adressiert Latour den Machtbegriff? In welchen theoretischen Kontexten seines politisch-philosophischen Gesamtprojekts taucht die Thematisierung des Machtbegriffs auf und wie ‚funktioniert‘ der Machtbegriff beiLatour im Gesamtprojekt? Entsagt sich Latour, wie der eingangs zitierte Imperativ nahelegen könnte, tatsächlich des Machtbegriffs? Oder enthält die Akteur-Netzwerk-Theorie (ANT) in der latourschen Fassung eine eigene Konzeptualisierung von so‐zialer und politischer Macht? ‚Schlägt‘ der Machtbegriff in der latourschen ANT‚zurück‘?

In den soziologischen, kulturwissenschaftlichen und politisch-theoretischen Diskursen haben die Themen der Subjektivierungsweisen, Singularisierungen, Selbstsetzungsstrategien und Technologien des Selbst in den letzten beiden Dekaden viel Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen. Angesichts dessen stellt die Suche nach „neue[n] Vokabulare[n] und Theorien der Kollektivität“ (so das CfP zu dieser Ausgabe der Zeitschrift) eine wichtige komplementäre Fragerichtung dar. Unser Beitrag will mit der Forschungsperspektive der ‚digitalen Gouvernementalität‘ sowie den Konzepten der ‚Kollektivitätseffekte‘ und der ‚digitalen Methexis‘ (Teilhabe, Partizipation) die Suche nach einem neuen heuristischen und konzeptuellen Rahmen zur Erfassung und kritischen Durchdringung der zugleich individualisierenden und kollektivierenden Phänomene der Digitalität unterstützen. Ausgangspunkt des Beitrages ist die Überlegung, dass sich die Phänomene der Digitalisierung und Digitalität machthistoriographisch mit Foucault als aktuelle Form von Gouvernementalität – genauer: digitale Gouvernementalität – beschreiben lassen, d.h. als spezifisches epistemischpraktisches Ensemble aus Regierungstechnologien, Subjektivierungsweisen und Wissensformen der Digitalität. Unsere grundlegende These ist, dass sich in der Digitalität und digitalisierten Gesellschaft sowohl Regime der verstärkten Individualisierung als auch Regime der Kollektivierung und Kollektivität installieren, wobei erstere immer schon durch letztere eingeholt sind. Die theoretisch-konzeptuelle Herausforderung besteht darin, beide Ausdrucksformen der digitalen Gesellschaft für sich und in ihrer kokonstitutiven Verfasstheit zu begreifen. Wir versuchen damit, Andreas Reckwitz’ Analyse der „Digitalisierung als Singularisierung“ sowohl um eine regierungsanalytische als auch um eine kollektivitätsfokussierte Perspektive zu ergänzen.
