This work exploits the concept of cruelty in its unique capacity to function as that which can be both a defining feature of humanity and its antithesis simultaneously. Cruelty puts each of us, as the kind of creature we are, how we belong in the world, and how we understand the moral relevance of being human, directly centerstage—unfiltered, unrested, undistracted, and inescapably vulnerable.
