Between October 2023 and January 2025, the Israeli military's sustained attacks on Gaza resulted in an estimated 186,000 deaths and the systematic destruction of healthcare infrastructure. Despite the professed commitment to human dignity, justice, and the minimization of suffering within bioethics, major institutions and scholars in the field have largely remained silent or selectively engaged with the crisis. This paper argues that the Gaza genocide exposes a deeper crisis within bioethics: its growing detachment from urgent, real‐world ethical challenges. Such detachment erodes public trust and raises fundamental questions about the discipline's relevance and credibility. The article interrogates the possible reasons and motivations for the silence and disengagement in the face of genocide in Gaza, and examines the institutional and disciplinary responsibilities that bioethics bears in response to health‐destroying state violence. Framing the inaction as a moral failure with far‐reaching implications, the article proposes alternative routes of ethical engagement and outlines steps toward a more inclusive and responsive bioethics. It calls for the urgent reorientation of the field toward a justice‐driven, politically conscious practice capable of confronting today's most pressing ethical issues.

Türkiye hosts approximately 3.6 million Syrian refugees, which accounts for roughly 4.5% of Türkiye's population. This places undeniable pressure on public institutions, particularly on healthcare services. The objective of this study is to document the healthcare structure for Syrian refugees and various challenges faced by Syrians when seeking healthcare and to highlight the ethical concerns emerging from those challenges. To achieve this, we conducted a comprehensive review of several qualitative studies and reports conducted by various organizations and institutions, specifically focusing on health or including a dedicated chapter on health issues, published between 2011 and 2023. Following an extensive analysis of the secondary literature, we classified the challenges into three categories: procedural, cultural, and psychosocial. We argue that each of these challenges is linked to overarching medical ethics concerns. Finally, we propose three possible means to mitigate the challenges Syrians experience in accessing and uptake of healthcare services in Türkiye.

In October 2024, Türkiye was shocked by the “Newborn Gang” scandal, in which a network of healthcare professionals allegedly exploited newborns for financial gain in private hospitals. The accused are charged with intentionally neglecting, mistreating or even killing of healthy infants in neonatal intensive care units to prolong their stays and maximize government reimbursements. This paper critically examines the structural and ethical failures exposed by the 2024 “Newborn Gang” scandal in Türkiye, in which healthcare professionals in private hospitals allegedly allowed or caused the deaths of newborns to profit from the state’s healthcare reimbursement system. Drawing on the frameworks of neoliberal critique and medical humanities, the study argues that such extreme violations are not isolated incidents of individual misconduct, but manifestations of deeper systemic vulnerabilities fostered by the neoliberalization of healthcare. It explores how deregulation, market incentives, and the erosion of ethical values—exacerbated by Türkiye’s Health Transformation Program—have created an environment where financial gain is prioritized over patient welfare. Comparative case studies are employed to contextualize these findings within broader global patterns of ethical collapse in healthcare systems influenced by market logic. The paper contends that merely strengthening oversight is insufficient; rather, a structural reorientation is needed. As a potential alternative, the study introduces Value-Based Healthcare as a model that aligns clinical outcomes with ethical imperatives. Ultimately, the paper calls for a fundamental moral recalibration of healthcare—one that affirms care, integrity, and justice as core values over profit and efficiency.

The World Congress of Bioethics held in Qatar in 2024 (WCB 2024) sparked controversy around the role of religion in bioethics, highlighting the need for critical discussions. During the congress, there was a strong push for incorporating religious values into bioethical discourse, raising questions about the validity and implications of such an approach. This paper examines the influence of religious thought on bioethical discussions, and the ongoing debate over the role of religious perspectives in this field. Here, we explore Jecker and colleagues’ pluriversal framework, which was proposed at WCB 2024, espousing a bioethical discourse grounded in civility, respect for law, justice, non-domination, and toleration. While the framework aims to embrace the world's cultural and religious diversity, here, we suggest that it struggles with significant ethical inconsistencies, poses challenges for pluralistic dialogue, and may be hard to reconcile with human rights. Through an analysis of Jecker's principles and their application, we discuss the difficulty of integrating conflicting religious views with ethical values and with widely accepted human rights frameworks. We then proceed to examine how and why religions might exert undue influence on bioethics, and we argue for a different future for bioethics.

Genetics: Medical, Theological and Ethical Aspects Tibbi, Dini ve Etik Boyutlariyla Genetik Genetik bilimi biyolojinin botanik ve zooloji alanındaki uygulamalarını aşarak, sınırlarını önce antropolojiye sonra tıbba doğru hızla genişletmiştir. Öyle ki artık biyokimyadan onkolojiye kadar neredeyse tüm biyomedikal disiplinler, genetiğin kavramları, ilkeleri ve metodolojisi ile aşılanmıştır. Modern tıbbın uygulama alanında geniş bir yer tutan genetik bilimi, bir hastalığa dair risk analizi, teşhis ve tedavi seçeneklerinin belirlenmesi, prognozun değerlendirilmesi gibi klinik uygulamanın farklı evrelerinde söz sahibi olmaktadır. İçinde bulunduğumuz 21. yüzyılda ise bu etkileşim eskisinden daha da güçlü hale gelerek devam etmektedir. Genetik biliminin klinikteki etkilerinin kapsamlı bir şekilde değerlendirildiği bu kitap, tüm dünyada tıbbın seyrini değiştirecek gelişmelere zemin teşkil eden genetik disiplininin olumlu ve olumsuz etkileri hakkında okuyucuya yetkili ağızlardan bilgiler taşımayı ve daha net bir fikir oluşturmayı hedeflemektedir. Kitapta dört ana bölüm bulunmaktadır. İlk bölümde doğum öncesi genetik uygulamalara, ikinci bölümde doğum sonrası (çocuk ve erişkinde) genetik testlere, üçüncü bölümde tıbbi genetiğin sıcak tartışma konusu olan Spinal Müsküler Atrofi’ye (SMA) ve dördüncü bölümde ise genetik bilgiyi felsefi bakışla ele alan makalelere yer verilmiştir. Genetiğin tıp pratiğini değiştirici ve dönüştürücü etkisine multidisipliner bir yaklaşımla ışık tutmayı amaçlayan bu eserin genetik hakkındaki Türkçe literatüre katkıda bulunmasını ümit ediyoruz.

Although abortion has been legally permitted in Türkiye for up to ten weeks since 1983, access in public hospitals has been reported to decline over the past decade due to clinicians’ refusals and institutional restrictions, despite the absence of a formal legal framework for conscientious objection. This study aims to explore the experiences and ethical reasoning of Turkish obstetricians and gynecologists regarding abortion practice and conscientious objection, with the goal of illuminating the ethico-legal tensions at play and informing clearer regulatory and institutional guidelines. This study employed a qualitative, phenomenological design. Fourteen specialists were recruited via purposive and snowball sampling; semi-structured online interviews were conducted between January–May 2025 using a guide with four interrelated domains. Audio was transcribed verbatim and analyzed in MAXQDA-10. A three-stage, iterative thematic analysis (independent coding, expert consultation, framework refinement) was undertaken until thematic saturation was confirmed. Thematic analysis identified four main themes: (1) legal knowledge and clinical approach to abortion, (2) moral reasoning in abortion decisions, (3) operationalizing conscientious objection in clinical settings, and (4) ethical conflicts between conscience and care. Each of these themes consisted of several subthemes. Abortion care in Türkiye is shaped by negotiations between law, morality, and institutional practice. Conscientious objection, though not legally recognized, is nonetheless practiced covertly as a contingent and relational stance, jeopardizing women’s reproductive autonomy. These findings underscore the fragility of reproductive rights and the urgent need for stronger policy frameworks to safeguard access, and autonomy.
