"Summary This chapter discusses the relation between ‘Morals’ (Sitten, Moral) and ‘Right’ (Recht) in Kant’s Metaphysics of Morals. Two questions should be distinguished: (1) Are Kantian Morals necessary for Kantian Right in the sense that the latter presupposes Kant’s specific account of morality? (2) Is Kant’s account of Morals sufficient to justify his conception of Right, in the sense that the fundamental principles of Right can be derived from, or normatively justified by, the Categorical Imperative (or some other element of Kantian Morals) without additional normative principles? With respect to the first question, it is argued that Kantian Right presupposes a central aspect of Kantian Morals: the idea of moral universality, where moral rights and duties are the same for all. This idea must be distinguished from the Categorical Imperative introduced in the Groundwork for a Metaphysics of Morals. Concerning the second question, it is argued that only when applied to individual juridical (coercible) rights does the idea of moral universality result in a Kantian conception of Right. Thus, Kant’s conception of Morals alone is not sufficient to derive juridical rights and duties."

Der Kommentar zur Kritik der reinen Vernunft bietet eine textnahe Erschließung der zentralen Begriffe, Thesen und Argumentationsgänge von Kants Hauptwerk auf aktuellem Forschungsstand. Es ist der erste Kommentar zur KrV, der den gesamten Text in der Fassung der ersten und zweiten Auflage gleichmäßig und lückenlos berücksichtigt. Davon profitieren vor allem die „Transzendentale Dialektik“ und die „Methodenlehre“, die in früheren Gesamtkommentaren meist nicht hinreichend berücksichtigt worden sind. Die Beiträge wurden nach einheitlichen Richtlinien verfasst, wobei unterschiedliche Herangehensweisen und Interpretationsansätze zur Geltung kommen. Um dem Leser dieses Kommentars die Orientierung zu erleichtern, ist jeder Beitrag in drei bzw. vier Teile untergliedert: Der erste Teil behandelt die Stellung und Funktion des kommentierten Textabschnitts in der KrV, der zweite Teil gibt einen Überblick über Inhalt und Aufbau des Abschnitts, der dritte Teil enthält den eigentlichen Textkommentar. Wo dies sinnvoll erschien, wurden in einem vierten Teil wichtige Interpretationsfragen angesprochen. Hinweise auf weiterführende Spezialliteratur am Ende eines jeden Beitrags, eine Auswahlbibliographie zu Kant und zur Kritik der reinen Vernunft sowie ein Namen- und ein Sachregister machen den Band zu einem komfortablen Arbeitsmittel für den Benutzer. Die vorliegende zweite Auflage trägt der Tatsache Rechnung, dass der Band mittlerweile als Standardwerk der Kant-Forschung gilt. Hier erstmals zusammengefasst, sind rund 20 der wichtigsten Aufsätze zur Philosophie Immanuel Kants von Volker Gerhardt aus fünf Jahrzehnten, die in verschiedenen Publikationen verstreut, teilweise schwer und kaum noch zugänglich sind. „Was ist ein vernünftiges Wesen?“, nimmt nicht nur den Titel eines zentralen Aufsatzes auf, sondern kann als Gerhardts systematische Fragestellung verstanden werden, der er in den Untersuchungen zur politischen Philosophie, Anthropologie, Ästhetik, Ethik, Religion, Kulturtheorie und Methodik Kants nachgeht. Die Texte fassen seinen Beitrag zur philosophischen Forschung Kants in einem Band zusammen – zum 300. Geburtstag Kants am 24. April 2024.

According to Kant, the ‘supreme principle of pure reason’ says that, if something conditioned is given, then so is the totality of its conditions, which is unconditioned. What kind of conditioning relation does Kant have in mind here and what does it mean for something to be conditioned, and for something else to be its condition? In this paper, I first discuss Eric Watkins’s suggestion that the conditioning relation in question is a generic relation of metaphysical dependence which takes various relations such as causation, constitution, etc. as its species (sect. 1). Against this proposal, I defend the view that there is no unified genus that these more specific relations share, but rather a disjunction of three different basic types of conditioning relations. These two readings of real conditioning in Kant correspond to two views, discussed among current metaphysicians, about what is called ‘metaphysical grounding’ (sect. 2). However, I argue that real conditioning in Kant is not just a nominal kind, as some proponents of a disjunctive account have claimed about grounding; rather, different relations are unified by their form, which derives from the three forms of relational judgment (categorical, hypothetical, disjunctive) and the three corresponding relational categories (inherence, causation, community) (sect. 3). Finally, I turn to the third element in the ‘supreme principle’, the unconditioned, which comes in two forms, namely in that of an unconditioned condition and that of a (possibly infinite) totality of conditions (sect. 4). As I will argue, these two forms of the unconditioned differ more deeply than Kant himself, in the first Critique, acknowledges.

The notion of hope is of central importance to Kant’s conception of human reason, in particular to his account of the highest good and the related ‘postulates’ of God and immortality. This becomes most obvious when, in the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant famously summarizes ‘all interest’ of human reason in three questions: ‘What can I know? What ought I to do? What may I hope?’ (A805/B833). This contribution concentrates on Kant’s answer to the question ‘What may I hope?’ and thus the role of hope in Kant’s account of human reason. After giving a brief account of what hope is, according to Kant, and what exactly he means by the question ‘What may I hope?’ in §2, the chapter turns to Kant’s answer in §3. It clarifies the relation between the highest good and the postulate of God’s existence (3.1) and argues that belief in God is what makes hope for morally deserved happiness rational (3.2). It then provides an account of the psychological role played by hope (3.3) and explains why Kant takes the hope question to be central to the interest of human reason. The chapter closes in §4 by indicating open questions and further lines of research.

Nach einer kurzen Rekapitulation der wichtigsten Aspekte der kantischen Konzeption der Aufklärung und einem Seitenblick auf die Aufklärungskritik Horkheimers und Adornos geht dieser Beitrag der Frage nach, ob Kants Aufklärungskonzeption im Zeitalter von Fake News, Facebook und Filterblasen noch aktuell ist. Ausgangspunkt ist die Frage, was den Impfskeptiker Kant von heutigen radikalen Impfgegnern unterscheidet. Mit Blick auf Kants Aufklärungskonzept wirft das zwei Fragen auf: erstens, was für die Fähigkeit zum Selbstdenken mehr erforderlich ist als der Mut, sich seines Verstandes selbständig zu bedienen; und zweitens, was für den gesellschaftlichen Prozess der Aufklärung mehr erforderlich ist als Meinungs- und Pressefreiheit. Beide Fragen haben eine Kantkritische Spitze, denn sie richten sich gegen zwei explizite Behauptungen Kants, nämlich dass Unmündigkeit auf einem Mangel des Mutes beruht und dass Aufklärung nicht mehr erfordert als Meinungs- und Pressefreiheit. Doch wie sich zeigen wird, stellt Kant selbst diese Verkürzungen im weiteren Verlauf seiner Überlegungen richtig. Tatsächlich gibt er auf unsere beiden Fragen jeweils dieselbe Antwort, nämlich dass Selbstdenken darin besteht, vernünftigen, allgemein nachvollziehbaren Gründen zu folgen.

In recent years, there has been a surge of new studies on different aspects of the Transcendental Doctrine of Method (TDM) that show both its importance to our understanding of Kant’s philosophy and its relevance to current philosophical concerns. This chapter will briefly discuss how Kant conceives of the tasks of both the TDM as a whole and its individual chapters with particular focus on a cluster of issues that have recently become the focus of intensive scholarly debate: Kant’s account of reason, his concept of architectonic unity, and his account of belief.

Ist die Wirklichkeit unabhängig davon, was wir über sie sagen, denken und wissen können? Oder gibt es eine "Wirklichkeit" nur relativ zu unseren Begriffen und den Bedeutungen unserer sprachlichen Ausdrücke? Um diese Frage geht es in der gegenwärtigen Realismus-Debatte in der analytischen Philosophie, die vor allem im angelsächsischen Sprachraum geführt wird. Der vorliegende Sammelband macht eine Auswahl der wichtigsten Aufsätze bequem zugänglich, wobei naturgemäß dem diskussionsbestimmenden Beitrag der US-amerikanischen Philosophie breiter Raum gegeben wird. Eine ausführliche Einleitung und ein weiterführendes Literaturverzeichnis erleichtern den Einstieg in das Thema. Der Band ist damit auch als Textgrundlage für Lehrveranstaltungen gut geeignet.
