Within the philosophy of religion, this article contributes to political science by developing a conceptual interpretation of how leadership, authority, and belief coproduce institutional legitimacy within religious and political institutions, collectively referred to as “institutions of belief”—religious and political bodies whose functioning depends on shared doctrines and recognized sources of legitimacy. Building on classical thinkers and theorists, the paper makes explicit three interdependent moments: authority, belief, and leadership; shows how shifts in authority structures transform leadership patterns of belief; and identifies mechanisms through which crises of authority generate political instability or new charismatic developments. The article is primarily conceptual but indicates where illustrative contemporary cases, particularly from the Middle East, can ground the framework and suggests empirical strategies for future assessment. This work explores two main questions: first, how authority, belief, and leadership interact within belief institutions; and second, how changes in sources or structures of authority influence leadership styles and political outcomes. It is primarily conceptual and synthetic, tracing the histories of ideas, providing operational definitions derived from earlier discussions, and developing an analytical framework. This framework can be applied to current cases, such as examples from the Middle East, and translated into empirical markers for testing.

Cet article explore la relation étroite entre la crise de l’autorité et celle de la croyance religieuse, ainsi que les conséquences sur le fonctionnement de la société. En nous appuyant sur les travaux de divers philosophes, nous avons défini et délimité les concepts d’autorité et de croyance, nous avons établi que l’autorité est un contenu de la croyance et réfléchi à la problématique de l’autorité de la croyance, et nous avons conclu que la croyance peut être utilisée pour justifier des formes d’autorité arbitraires et abusives. j La crise de l’autorité et celle de la croyance religieuse ont des conséquences importantes sur le fonctionnement de la société. Ces crises peuvent entraîner une perte de confiance dans les institutions et les valeurs établies, ainsi qu’une montée de l’individualisme et du relativisme moral. Cet article permet de mettre en lumière le pouvoir de la croyance et les enjeux qui en découlent, notamment en termes de manipulation et de confusion entre l’autorité politique et l’autorité religieuse. En encourageant une réflexion critique et une compréhension approfondie des concepts d’autorité et de croyance, nous pouvons contribuer à une meilleure compréhension des enjeux auxquels sont confrontées les valeurs des institutions religieuses et politiques aujourd’hui. j تُسلّط هذه المقالة الضّوء على العلاقة الوثيقة بين أزمة السّلطة وأزمة الاعتقاد الدّينيّ أو الإيمان، وتُحلّل عواقب هذه الأزمات على سير عمل المجتمع. في استعراضها أعمال العديد من الفلاسفة، تقدّم المقالة تعريفًا وتحديدًا لمفهومَي السّلطة والإيمان باحثةً في العلاقة بينهما، مع التّركيز على إمكانيّة استخدام الإيمان لتبرير أشكال السّلطة التّعسّفيّة والمسيئة. إنّ أزمة السّلطة وأزمة الاعتقاد الدّينيّ لهما عواقب جوهريّة على سير عمل المجتمع. يمكن أن تؤدّي هذه الأزمات إلى فقدان الثّقة في المؤسّسات والقيم الرّاسخة، فضلًا عن تنامي الفرديّة والنّسبيّة الأخلاقيّة. تساعد هذه المقالة في تسليط الضّوء على قوّة الإيمان والقضايا الّتي تنشأ عنه، بخاصّة فيما يتعلّق بالتّلاعب والخلط بين السّلطتين السّياسيّة والدّينيّة. إنّنا من خلال تشجيع التّفكير النّقديّ والفهم العميق لمفاهيم السّلطة والإيمان، يمكننا المساهمة في تعزيز قيم المؤسّسات الدّينيّة والسّياسيّة.

This paper contributes to the theological understanding of the presence and mission of lay members within the Church, particularly focusing on their role in the world and specifically in Lebanon. By analyzing the Catholic Church's teachings, such as the documents from the Second Vatican Council and the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation for the Laypeople, as well as the Synod for Lebanon, this study seeks to reflect on how laypeople, as members of the Church, can manifest the Church's presence and contribute to the establishment of the kingdom of peace, justice, and love. It explores the unique vocation of laypeople, how they embody the Church's mission in civil society and the theological implications of their role as signs of the Church in the world. Additionally, it aims to propose new perspectives to ensure that Lebanese laypeople can effectively embody and manifest the Church's mission in their communities, especially in the post-synodal phase of the Lebanese Church. Through this theological inquiry, the study aspires to contribute to a practical renewal within the Church, enhancing the role of laypeople in realizing the Church's mission in contemporary contexts.

Les guerres, passées ou actuelles en Ukraine et ailleurs dans le monde, les pandémies, de la peste à la Covid-19, les drames humains comme l'explosion du port de Beyrouth... confrontés de tous temps à des situations tragiques, croyants, athées ou agnostiques font émerger des questions existentielles sur l'origine de l'Homme, sa raison d'être, sa finitude... Donner un sens à sa vie est une réponse possible dont la source serait à trouver dans la croyance et l'espérance. Conscient ou inconscient, volontaire ou non, religieux ou politique... quelles que soient les formes que le croire peut prendre, celui-ci s' avère essentiel et universel. Est-il donc un besoin? Un besoin ne peut être négligé puisqu'il est vital: pouvons-nous mourir du fait de ne pas croire? Cet ouvrage, fruit d'une recherche en philosophie de la religion, porte ainsi sur le besoin de croire que l'autrice cherche à traiter, non seulement à travers les ouvrages de philosophie mais aussi en s' appuyant sur les concepts développés par des penseurs issus des autres disciplines comme la théologie, les religions, la psychologie, la sociologie, les neurosciences et les sciences politiques.

The present article is published in Proche-Orient Chrétien, N.66, VOL.3-4, JAN. 2017, USJ: Beirut, pp. 425-430. It is a philosophical review of Philippe Capelle-Dumont and Yannick Courtel book “Religion et Liberté” that fetches the records of the First International Symposium of the Francophone Society of Philosophy of Religion about the two concepts Religion and Freedom. On one hand, religion has always been considered as a pole of practices and references contrary to freedom declining a dependence on a "binding doctrine"; on the other hand, religion has undergone several political representations in the many spaces of cultural, social and international life which is urgent to re-examine. The article proposes a synthesis of the conferences of Philippe Capelle-Dumont, Jean-Luc Marion, Jean Greisch, Joseph O’Leary, François Chenet, Souleymane Bachir Diagne, Francis Jacques, Pierluigi Valenza, Danielle Cohen-Levinas, Yannick Courtel and Jean Grondin who concludes with the “freedom to philosophize about religion”.
