This article outlines a non-reductive neurophilosophical exploration of attention, arguing that its current scientific study is marked by ambiguities and internal inconsistencies. We propose that dominant reductive and anthropocentric assumptions have led contemporary research on attention into conceptual dead ends—including an overreliance on so-called “analytical approaches”, rigid dichotomies, and circular reasoning—that continue to obstruct the formulation of a coherent scientific definition of the phenomenon. To address these challenges, we advocate for the use of non-reductive biogenic frameworks, suggesting that attention be reconceptualized as a complex and embodied process, essential for organisms to regulate adaptive behavior and maintain thermodynamic equilibrium. Ultimately, this article seeks to promote more robust neurophilosophical investigations of attention, integrating insights from neuroscience, psychology, and evolutionary biology, while emphasizing the indispensable role of philosophical reflection in advancing scientific understanding.

The main philosophical perspectives on human subjectivity uphold a series of properties that make it scientifically intractable. Given the importance of understanding subjectiveness in such terms, this chapter aims to propose an alternative perspective that considers not only the phenomenology of subjective experiences but also the underlying processes and mechanisms. We will start from Sellarsian worldviews and the illusionist philosophical current to explain that all our perceptual experiences are oriented towards affordances. The processes and mechanisms involved in these experiences will be developed based on Predictive Processing theory. This theory will be used to explain not only external perception but also internal perception, which is key to understanding subjectivity. We will see that predictive subjectivity has some conceptual limitations, and we will seek to address them with Illusionism.

O presente artigo objetiva fornecer uma apresentação crítica, compreensiva e inédita na língua portuguesa do Processamento Preditivo (PP) – um esquema teórico para a compreensão da cognição que propõe uma inversão de nosso entendimento padrão da ação, percepção, sensação e sua relação. Aqui, nosso objetivo primário será introduzir os principais conceitos e ideias do PP, tratando-o como um modelo moderadamente corporificado de cognição e analisando suas credenciais como uma proposta teórica unificadora. Para tanto, partiremos de uma contextualização histórica de algumas correntes de pensamento que teriam fomentado seu desenvolvimento inicial, passando por uma descrição não-matemática do Princípio da Energia Livre, que fundamenta e subentende a atuação de suas especificidades para, então, esclarecermos o papel que, segundo o PP, a inferência bayesiana, a minimização dos erros de predição e a chamada Inferência Ativa possuiriam na manutenção homeostática de nossos cérebros e corpos preditivos. Por fim, forneceremos uma síntese de algumas consequências daquilo que o PP poderia trazer à compreensão contemporânea do cérebro e comportamento humanos, concluindo que, embora sua descrição da cognição como um processo preditivo único e contínuo prometa eventualmente unificar paradigmas explicativos e níveis de análise distintos, por ora, talvez seja melhor concebê-lo de forma mais modesta, como uma ferramenta ou heurística para nos auxiliar a repensar vários dos tópicos centrais ao estudo científico e filosófico da mente.

In this work, we introduce what we believe to be a more sensitive variation of the Metaproblem of consciousness, structured by philosopher Keith Frankish (2017): the Illusion Problem. To do so, we explore the process that leads us to treat each and every quale as an illusion, in addition to showing how qualia are present in most supposedly physicalist theories, which we will later call “Closeted Dualism”. We also emphasize that the illusionist theory is already widely used or considered by philosophers who seek a scientifically plausible way out of the problems of consciousness. Once done, the reader will be ready for the more “technical” part of this article, in which we explore and defend the main concepts and mechanisms of Illusionism.
