Deleuze’s Conception of Virtuality Versus Virtual Computer Objects
    with Małgorzata Czarnocka
    Foundations of Science 1-13. forthcoming.
Is Gilles Deleuze’s concept of virtuality sufficiently close to the concept of virtuality used in informatics and the philosophy of information for computer-created objects and virtual reality to justify the latter’s explanation by means of the former? This question is the main objective of the present paper. We aim to show that, contrary to its most widespread interpretations, the Deleuzian conception of virtuality is epistemological and not ontological, and that this invalidates the belief tha…Read more

The Problem of Existence of Virtual Objects from the Philosophical Perspective
    Filozofia i Nauka. Studia Filozoficzne I Interdyscyplinarne 10 137-156. 2022.
I consider the problem of existence of virtual objects, mainly their mode of existence, while omitting the issue of the criteria of their existence. I present and analyze the concepts of modes of existence of virtual objects proposed in the literature of the subject, and then I demonstrate my own position on the issue. My position on the existence of virtual objects has certain points coinciding with the already postulated views, but at the same time it differs from them in some basic aspects. I…Read more

Problem reprezentacji w nauce – obszary niezbadane
    Roczniki Filozoficzne 69 (2): 215-239. 2021.
Zagadnienie reprezentacji jest o…Read more

    Modele w koncepcji nauki Ronalda N. Giere’ego
    Filozofia i Nauka. Studia Filozoficzne I Interdyscyplinarne 2 257-275. 2014.
The paper reconstructs and analyzed critically Ronald N. Giere’s view on scien-tific models situated within his model conception of science. It is demonstrated that Giere’s conception of science is too poor: it is not capable of determining certain properties of models postulated in it. First of all, it does not present clearly their status of non-linguistic, abstract entities, nor the 4-ary relation of representation.

This book investigates the main 20th and 21st-century philosophical conceptions of science, in which models are a founding category. The category of model is more and more often alleged in philosophy as – it is claimed – models are significant and effective tools of science, or because by applying the category of semantic models science can be explained on a non-reconstructive basis. The category of model is considered the very basis or, at least, a main tool of substituting neopositivistic and …Read more

    Modele teoretyczne
    Filozofia i Nauka. Studia Filozoficzne I Interdyscyplinarne 3 141-157. 2015.
I analyse three most interesting and extensive approaches to theoretical models: classical ones—proposed by Peter Achinstein and Michael Redhead, and the rela-tively rareanalysed approach of Ryszard Wójcicki, belonging to a later phase of his research where he gave up applyingthe conceptual apparatus of logical semantics. I take into consideration the approaches to theoretical models in which they are qualified as models representing the reality. That is why I…Read more

Dwa typy modeli w nauce a problem odkrycia i zagadnienie reprezentacji
    Filozofia i Nauka. Studia Filozoficzne I Interdyscyplinarne 5 271-288. 2017.
In the article the models which are reconstructed in the philosophy of science from the praxis of science are divided into two main types: 1) analogue and metaphor-based models and 2) representational models. I examine functions of the models of both the types, and demonstrate that the models of type 1) are used in science as instruments of acquiring new knowledge on the basis of a knowledge accepted earlier; and models of type 2) are used to create co…Read more
  • Metafory w nauce
    with Małgorzata Czarnocka
    Zagadnienia Naukoznawstwa (1 (191)): 5-26. 2012.
We analyze critically the most important contemporary conceptions of metaphors in science, i.e., those proposed by Max Black, Rom Harré, Thomas S. Kuhn, and Donald Davidson. We also present an alternative view on the metaphor essence. This view states that a metaphor is the conclusion of deductive reasoning; its premises are a description of the secondary object of the metaphor and the thesis on similarity between the secondary and primary objects. The metaphorical character is created by referr…Read more
  • Modele a metafory
    with Małgorzata Czarnocka
    Studia Philosophica Wratislaviensia 7 (4): 77-95. 2012.
The paper discusses the most important conceptions of metaphor-based models, i.e., Mary Hesse’s and Daniela Bailer-Jones’ conceptions grounded on Max Black’s cognitive metaphor theory, as well as Rom Harré’s insight into the essence of metaphorical models by the use of Saussure’s valeur idea.
