Between Theater of the World, Eschatology, and Dystopia: Nietzsche’s Figurations of the ‘Last Man’. The ambiguous nominal phrase the last man, which emerges around 1800, presupposes the Enlightenment notion of progressive human self-determination, and it involves the revision of the expectations associated with this notion. In the present article, we will quote important literary figurations of the last man (Jean Paul, Cousin de Grainville, Mary Shelley) to highlight how Nietzsche has endowed the nominal phrase the last man with new meanings. He uses it in six text units of his published works or works ready for publication (in addition, there are eleven in the posthumous fragments). Our analysis will focus on three texts from Nietzsche’s middle-phase works. In them, Nietzsche translates the ambiguity of the adjective last into sophisticated and innovative literary- philosophical scenarios. Against the background of contemporary astronomy and Darwinian evolutionary theory, he parodies the baroque genre of the divine world theater and transforms the post-eschatological figure of the last man into the gravedigger of anthropocentric humanism. Zarathustra seems to escape such aporias with his proclamation of the future overman, who shall give new meaning to the earth: here the last as the utmost degree resonates in the positive sense of an utmost creative effort. Yet the proclamation of the last man as overman fails to hold persuasive power over Zarathustra’s audience; to reach this power, Zarathustra conjures up the repulsive counter-figure of the last man as the least, the lowest in degree, who threatens to become the longest-living. From here a line leads to the major literary-political dystopias of the 20th century (Zamyatin, Huxley, Orwell), as well as to the caricatures of bourgeois humanism in the European avant-garde movements. A well-known example that will be quoted to conclude our analysis is Franz Kafka’s Report for an Academy.

‘Race’, Politics and Myth in Nietzsche’s Later Writings: Reflections on Beyond Good and Evil and On the Genealogy of Morality In the second half of the nineteenth century, race became a central political concept in most Western societies. Nietzsche’s work appears to take part in this development. Yet he emphasizes the primacy of the cultural over the biological and, unlike racial theorists such as Gobineau, does not interpret “mixed races” as a sign of decadence. When Nietzsche imitates the biologizing political discourse of unequal human races, he intends to uncover that discourse’s provenance and thus to question its legitimacy. A philological reading of his racialized statements reveals their critical intent.

Nietzsche’s Concept of Barbarism: From Rhetoric to Genealogy. In Nietzsche’s writings of the early and middle period, a rather conventional and humanistic concept of barbarism prevails: ‚barbarism‘ is the opposite of ‚culture‘; it signals a lack of educational and aesthetic achievement, that is, a lack of unity and homogeneity on the levels of form and style. It is mainly in Nietzsche’s later writings, in particular Jenseits von Gut und Böse (Beyond Good and Evil) and Zur Genealogie der Moral (On the Genealogy of Morality), that the concept of barbarism undergoes a genealogical critique aiming at uncovering the concept’s emergence („Entstehung“) and provenance („Herkunft“). This critique tends to de-legitimize the concept insofar as the violence to which the concept refers proves to be the hidden foundation of culture and not culture’s opposite. What is labelled as ‚barbarian‘ is in fact the manifestation of creative aristocratic strength, namely the morality of the masters („Herrenmoral“). Thus the derogatory concept of barbarism turns out to be a manifestation of the violent inversion of the morality of the masters by the morality of the slaves („Sklavenmoral“). At times however, this delegitimization of the concept gives way to its mythicizing vindication: Nietzsche uses it then to legitimize his postulate of a neo-aristocratic morality ‚beyond good and evil‘. Nietzsche’s genealogy of barbarism thus proves to be profoundly ambiguous. This ambiguity can be traced back to the interference of legitimization and de-legitimization which characterizes genealogies in the non-metaphorical sense, as mythical narratives of past origins.

Dem 'Barbarischen' sowie damit verbunden der 'Rasse' kommt zweifellos die Stellung von Grundbegriffen in Friedrich Nietzsches Denken zu, auf die er immer wieder zurückgreift. Seine Texte zeigen allerdings, dass diese Begriffe von schwankender Bedeutung und somit deutlich vielschichtiger sind, als es auf den ersten Blick scheinen mag: Überwiegt in den frühen und mittleren Werken etwa noch ein vergleichsweise konventionelles Konzept des 'Barbarischen', dem zufolge 'Barbarei' als Gegensatz der Zivilisation bestimmt wird und einen Mangel an kultureller, intellektueller sowie ästhetischer Bildung bedeutet, so erfährt das pejorative Konzept des 'Barbarischen' in Nietzsches späten Werken eine deutliche Kritik: Enthüllt wird dessen Geburt aus dem Geist einer 'Sklavenmoral', die die schöpferische Kraft einer 'Herrenmoral' als gewalttätige 'Barbarbei' zu delegitimieren sucht. Ähnliche Verschiebungen und Verwerfungen lassen sich für Nietzsches Rede von der 'Rasse' beschreiben. Diesen spannungsreichen Konzeptualisierungen, die sich vereindeutigenden und/oder vereinnahmenden Rezeptionen entziehen, gehen die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes nach und bieten damit Orientierung auf einem bislang noch unterforschtem Feld.

Die Untersuchung von Heinrich Heines (1797-1856) Umgang mit Mythos und Mythologie kann einen Beitrag zur gegenwärtigen Diskussion über das Problem 'Mythos und Moderne' leisten. Heines Interesse gilt dem Weltbild, das sich mit dem Begriff des mythischen Denkens beschreiben lässt. Zwar empfängt auch Heine Impulse von der frühromantischen 'neuen Mythologie', und er partizipiert an der Umwertung des Volksglaubens in der spätromantischen 'deutschen Mythologie'. Doch bei ihm leistet das mythische Denken Widerstand dem Versuch, es für politische Zwecke in Anspruch zu nehmen und als gesamtgesellschaftliches Weltbild zu restituieren. Dieser Widerstand bedingt die Form und den Wandel von Heines Umgang mit Mythos und Mythologie. Eine Lösung des Konflikts zwischen Mythos und Moderne zeichnet sich bei Heine nicht ab, aber sowohl die Fremdheit als auch die Lebendigkeit des Mythos werden erfahrbar.
