The ongoing debate concerning gender-fair language in grammatical gender languages reveals a profound philosophical tension between the principles of inclusivity and accessibility. Specifically, certain linguistic strategies designed to ensure equity for non-binary individuals appear to impede accessibility, raising questions about potential trade-offs between these two ideals. This article investigates the nature of this apparent conflict by exploring the conceptual foundations of both accessibility and inclusion. I analyse specific linguistic strategies as a case study and argue that, although they may pose obstacles to accessibility, these tensions are not insurmountable. I conclude that, to reconcile accessibility and inclusion, it is crucial to understand the nature of accessibility challenges. Once these challenges are identified, appropriate solutions can be implemented to overcome them.

This paper examines the psychological and ethical implications of misgendering, understood as a form of microaggression that undermines the gender identity of trans* individuals. Drawing on psychological, medical, and philosophical literature, it explores how structural injustices and social gender norms contribute to the vulnerability of trans* people and affect identity formation. While scholars such as Dembroff and Wodak (2018) and Kapusta (2016) have already identified psychological harm as one reason to morally oppose misgendering, this study develops that argument by providing a more detailed analysis of its psychological impact. The paper evaluates Dembroff and Wodak’s twofold claim: a moderate duty not to misgender trans* individuals and a radical duty to eliminate gender-specific pronouns altogether. It endorses the moderate claim, while challenging the radical one, arguing that gendered language can play a crucial role in affirming personal identity. Finally, it calls for context-sensitive strategies to prevent misgendering and promote inclusive linguistic practices.

This report presents the results of SWIP Italia’s 2022 data collection on the presence and distribution of women in academic philosophy in Italy. It offers a quantitative overview of gender representation across academic ranks and institutions, highlighting persistent disparities and the underrepresentation of women in key positions. The aim is to provide transparent and accessible data to inform institutional policies and raise awareness within the academic community. Overall, the findings show that women remain underrepresented in philosophy in Italy, particularly in roles that allow for greater career advancement and research independence.

This article aims to analyse one of the most innovative issues at the centre of the debate on inclusive language: how to include all individuals beyond gender binarism. I propose a discussion of the Italian language as a case study to understand which inclusive strategy can reconcile countering stereotypes with including all gender identities. To this end, I contextualise the topic within the contemporary debate, showing how certain linguistic usages can make women and non-binary individuals invisible (§ 2). Then, I illustrate the linguistic strategies identified for the Italian language and analyse some of their advantages and disadvantages (§ 3). Subsequently, to determine which strategies seem most promising for effectively countering gender stereotypes, I discuss arguments concerning visibility and obscuration strategies (§ 4). Finally, to emphasise the importance of including non-binary identities linguistically, I analyse several moral, political, and bureaucratic arguments in favour of this approach (§ 5). I conclude by arguing that the non-binary visibility strategy best addresses the needs proposed in this article, namely, countering stereotypes and including all identities.

In this paper, I present an analysis of gender-unfair usages and gender-fair strategies as they may be observed in the Italian language. First, I contextualize the topic within the contemporary debate and analyze how linguistic uses are unfair and become vehicles of stereotypes. Subsequently, I provide an overview of the strategies that can be adopted in Italian, which may be broadly categorized as giving visibility to or obscuring genders. Next, I present a series of compelling arguments in favour of using visibility strategies. I conclude by arguing that the most effective strategy for challenging androcentrism in language and gender stereotypes is to make gender identities visible.
