My name is Maximiliana. I'm currently a researcher and doctoral candidate (ABD) in philosophy at the CUNY Graduate Center in NYC. I work in philosophy of science and social and political philosophy. Although I am interested in general issues in these areas, my main focus is on exploring descriptive and normative issues surrounding sex and gender, especially to illuminate the experiences of marginalized groups like trans people and help advance their liberation.
In the philosophy of science, I focus primarily on issues about the epistemology and metaphysics of science. For example, I am interested in what makes scientific constructs valid and how values of different kinds inform our selection of scientific theories. Additionally, I investigate particular sciences like biology and neuroscience to assess what they claim about constructs like sex and gender identity.
In contrast, in social and political philosophy, I focus primarily on gender. I work on issues like what the ontology of gender, and of related constructs like gender identity, are; whether gender is necessarily oppressive; how to respect gender identity; how to apply human rights law to women's and queer issues; genocide against gender-based groups; whether various classical ethical traditions are transphobic such as Buddhism or Daoism; and so on.
