    The article explores the tensions of belonging by focusing on the clash between nostalgic and universal values. Because of the inherent tension that they share, the concepts of Bildung and nostalgia provide an opening for understanding human belonging as ranging between nostalgic rootedness and the search for universality.     In this paper, it will be argued that the concept of ‘Bildung’ has a twofold role in pedagogical research.
