My doctoral research investigates whether existing models of social robots will be capable of empathy, arguing that because these agents rely on computer code, will not be capable of understanding the contents of human experience. Therefore, social robots are not suitable for roles involving empathy, and require a new type of robotics architecture to better replicate semantic content produced by biological systems.
