I'm an Assistant Professor in the philosophy department of the University of Virginia. My main research program concerns the legitimacy of institutions of various sorts. I propose a novel understanding of the concept of legitimacy that centers on the occupation of roles in social practices. This informs our understanding of state legitimacy and helps guide our theorization of the legitimacy of other kinds of institutions, especially supranational institutions, and other kinds of legitimacy discourses as well.
