I am an assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy and the Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and affiliate faculty of the Illinois Program in Law and Philosophy and the Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. My research falls into two areas. The first area lies at the intersection of contemporary moral philosophy and 18th-century moral philosophy (esp. Adam Smith). The second area is biomedical ethics (esp. the values at play in the physician-patient relationship). I am also interested in Hume, Nietzsche, Freud and psychoanalysis, and the later Wittgenstein.
