17On Cirilo Bautista’s Ontology of the PoemPhilosophia: International Journal of Philosophy (Philippine e-journal) 23 (1): 31-47. 2022.In Words and Battlefields: A Theoria on the Poem, Cirilo Bautista advances the thesis that there is such a thing as a Filipino epic and that it is key to nation-building.1 Well known for his long-form poetry, Bautista can be said to be taking a position on one of the main issues in the philosophy of poetry, namely the ontology or being of poems. I argue that his theory of the poem has three cornerstones, which I critique and evaluate through a close reading of the epic poem “The Cave.”

47Save the Digients! On the Moral Status of AIIn David Friedell (ed.), The Philosophy of Ted Chiang, Palgrave Macmillan. pp. 195-202. 2025.This chapter explores the moral status of artificial intelligence through the lens of Ted Chiang’s The Lifecycle of Software Objects. Using the concept of moral status, I examine whether Chiang’s digients—intelligent, evolving AI beings—should be afforded ethical consideration. Drawing from philosophical theories on personhood, sentience, and rights, I analyze the implications of granting AI moral status and whether they should be treated as animals, children, or legal persons. I argue that AI w…Read more

70Yes, We Are AngryPhilosophy and Global Affairs 4 (2): 223-236. 2024.Using Kate Manne’s ameliorative definition of misogyny as a framework, the author details four key misogynistic assumptions she has encountered in the academe, specifically in the field of philosophy. She shows that such assumptions are remarkably persistent, underpinning attitudes and policies that have directly contributed to the denigration and exclusion of women in field.

1Pusong Mamon: Nel Noddings’s Care Ethics in the Filipino Educational SettingBudhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture 17 1-19. 2013.This paper evaluates Nel Noddings’s view of moral education in the context of teaching in a Philippine university. It first presents the key aspects of Noddings’s ethical theory, identifying her three strategic moves as follows: the dissolution of the public/private split, the replacement of justice-based punishment system with a caring system, and the promotion of care work as the core of education itself. Through a discussion of two cases of academic dishonesty, the author assesses the merits …Read more

43Teaching as Storytelling: Ontological and Ethical ImplicationsPhilosophia: International Journal of Philosophy (Philippine e-journal) 16 (2): 158-167. 2015.My aim in this paper is to explore what Paul Ricoeur's theory of narrative can contribute to the discussior about the nature and aims of education. Debates about what learning is and how teaching ought to be conducted are usually based ontological theories, i.e., claims about the nature of pedagogy and its desiderata. Theories of narrative (seeTaylor 1989, Polkinghorne 1988, Carr 1986, and Mctclntyre 1981, for example) are usually applied to discussions about teaching and research methods. Howev…Read more
