I have always understood philosophy as praxis, a form of practical wisdom, the realization of ideas. In this understanding, there is no opposition of theory and practice but rather the embodiment of our ideas in our actions. In the spirit of philosophy as praxis, the focus of my philosophical counseling is on the relevance of philosophy to our everyday lives.
My expertise is in 19th and 20th century Continental philosophy and the ancient philosophy of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. The main influence on my counseling practice is the work of the German philosopher, Gerd B. Achenbach, founder of the contemporary movement in practical philosophy.
Much of my scholarly writing focuses on the figure of Antigone as presented first by Sophocles and much later by Hegel. My fascination with Antigone in literature and philosophy, along with my love of painting and poetry, has profoundly shaped my thinking about the transformative role of creativity and widened my vision of philosophy as praxis. I have come to understand philosophical practice as a creative endeavor that opens us up to new ways of thinking and living.
