Patrick Denning

I did my PhD at the University of Edinburgh, focusing on moral relativism and faultless moral disagreement. My thesis argued that recent developments in the philosophy of language could be deployed to develop a form of moral relativism that is more plausible than its lack of popularity might suggest. In particular, I drew on MacFarlane's framework of assessment sensitivity and Kolbel's notion of faultless disagreement to argue that relativism is the best available account of moral discourse. Part of a chapter from the thesis is forthcoming as an article in Thought 11:3 under the title: Faultless Disagreement as Evidence for Moral Relativism.
