Nous proposons dans cet article un cadre conceptuel pour la résolution d’une classe de conflits de valeurs. Une telle méthodologie est fondée sur la notion de matrices de concepts (Franceschi 2002). De manière préliminaire, nous décrivons les éléments fondamentaux des matrices de concepts. Nous nous intéressons ensuite à la représentation mathématique de ces dernières. Nous évoquons également le problème du germe de l’opposé, en relation avec cette modélisation. Nous nous attachons ensuite à décrire la classe de conflits de valeurs concernée par la présente méthode de résolution. Nous décrivons également les différentes étapes conduisant à la résolution de ce type de conflits de valeurs, en considérant plusieurs instances et en distinguant notamment entre les conflits fondés sur des degrés de valeurs objectifs ou subjectifs. Nous évoquons en outre les modalités d’application du produit de Nash dans le présent cadre conceptuel. Enfin, nous exposons l’application du présent modèle au dilemme du prisonnier, ainsi qu’au dilemme itéré du prisonnier.

In this article, we aim to propose a solution to two quantum paradoxes—the Young’s double-slit paradox and the EPR paradox—as well as to a closely related philosophical paradox: the Black-Leslie paradox of the spheres. We first focus on constructing a model of quantum objects and providing a characterization thereof. To this end, we develop a model based on objects possessing a property of multi-location. Applying Occam’s razor, we adopt the conceptual framework of n-universes (Franceschi, 2001) to facilitate the construction of simplified models. We then test the internal consistency of the model thus developed, both to verify that it is free from contradictions and to determine the properties that logically follow from the very definition of the constructed objects. We also discuss the geometric properties that emerge from the inherent nature of multi-located objects. Subsequently, we describe the interpretation provided by this model for the double-slit experiment, quantum entanglement and the EPR paradox, and the Black-Leslie paradox of the spheres. Finally, we offer a characterization of space as it emerges from this model.

Nous nous attachons dans cet article à proposer une solution pour deux paradoxes quantiques – le paradoxe des fentes de Young et le paradoxe EPR – ainsi que pour un paradoxe philosophique qui leur est étroitement lié : le paradoxe des sphères de Black-Leslie. Nous nous attachons tout d’abord à construire une modélisation des objets quantiques et à en donner une caractérisation. Nous construisons pour cela un modèle fondé sur les objets possédant une propriété de multi-location. Faisant application du rasoir d’Occam, nous faisons appel au cadre conceptuel des n-univers (Franceschi 2001), afin de permettre la construction de modèles simplifiés. Nous nous attachons ensuite à éprouver la cohérence du modèle ainsi élaboré, afin d’une part, de vérifier s’il n’est pas entaché de contradiction et d’autre part, de déterminer les propriétés qui découlent logiquement de la définition-même des objets ainsi construits. Nous mentionnons également les propriétés géométriques qui découlent de la nature-même des objets possédant une propriété de multi-location. Ensuite, nous décrivons l’interprétation associée au présent modèle de l’expérience des fentes de Young, puis de l’intrication quantique et du paradoxe EPR, ainsi que du paradoxe des sphères de Black-Leslie. Enfin, nous donnons une caractérisation de l’espace, telle qu’elle résulte du présent modèle.

In this paper, I present a solution to the Liar Paradox. I begin by describing the paradox itself and its Strengthened variant, while also defining the reference class of truth values associated with them. I then specify the cases in which propositions are unvalued. After providing a more detailed account of the elements underlying the Strengthened Liar, I examine several alternative approaches to evaluating propositions. I then mention other propositions that produce a paradoxical effect similar in nature to that of the Strengthened Liar. Next, I provide a detailed description of post-evaluation by correspondence, which lies at the heart of the paradox. I then proceed to offer both a general characterization and a specific analysis of the reasoning error that leads to the paradoxical effect inherent in the Strengthened Liar. Finally, I outline the elements of the theory of truth that underlie the present analysis.

Je présente dans cet article une solution pour le paradoxe du Menteur. Je commence par décrire ce dernier ainsi que la variante du Menteur renforcé, m’attachant également à définir la classe de référence des valeurs de vérité qui leur est associée. Je définis ensuite les cas où des propositions sont non-valuées. Après avoir décrit plus en détail les éléments qui sous-tendent le Menteur renforcé, je m’attache à mentionner plusieurs approches alternatives pour l’évaluation des propositions. Je mentionne ensuite d’autres propositions qui produisent un effet paradoxal de même nature que celui du Menteur renforcé. Je m’attache ensuite à décrire en détail la post-évaluation par correspondance, qui se trouve au cœur du paradoxe. Je m’emploie ensuite à présenter à la fois une caractérisation générale et une analyse spécifique de l’erreur de raisonnement qui conduit à l’effet paradoxal inhérent au Menteur renforcé. Je termine en exposant les éléments de la théorie de la vérité qui sous-tend la présente analyse.

In this article, I present a solution to the Sorites paradox based on a dialectical analysis. After briefly describing the paradox, I discuss the coexistence of a precise taxonomy and a vague taxonomy, emphasizing their complementarity. I also aim to clarify the distinction between unidimensional and multidimensional vague predicates, showing as well how any vague predicate can alternatively be characterized as either unidimensional or multidimensional. I then describe cases in which a conflict arises between precise and vague predicates, illustrating this in particular with the medical condition of progeria. In light of this conflict, I ultimately undertake a diagnosis of the paradox, showing how the base premise and the inductive premise can turn out to be false, while the conclusion can prove to be true, under certain circumstances.

Je présente dans cet article une solution pour le paradoxe sorite, basée sur une analyse dialectique. Après avoir décrit brièvement le paradoxe, je mentionne la coexistence d’une taxinomie précise et d’une taxinomie vague, en soulignant leur complémentarité. Je m’attache également à clarifier la distinction entre prédicats vagues unidimensionnels et multi-dimensionnels, en montrant également comment tout prédicat vague peut être caractérisé, de manière alternative, comme un prédicat unidimensionnel ou multi-dimensionnel. Je décris ensuite les cas où se présente un conflit entre les prédicats précis et vague, en l’illustrant notamment avec la condition médicale de la progéria. À la lumière de ce conflit, je m’attache enfin à effectuer un diagnostic du paradoxe, en montrant comment la prémisse de base et la prémisse d’induction peuvent se révéler fausses, de même que la conclusion peut s’avérer vraie, dans certaines circonstances.

In this article, we propose, to our knowledge, a novel characterization of a cognitive distortion: requalification into the same pole. Such a characterization fits within the general model of cognitive distortions (Franceschi, 2007). We begin by defining an extended model of cognitive distortions, incorporating elements from the conceptual framework of matrices of concepts (Franceschi, 2002), to allow for a broader definition of the taxon system. We then focus on defining requalification into the same pole and distinguishing it from a related cognitive distortion: requalification into the other pole.

In this article, we present a neo-Aristotelian formulation of the doctrine of the mean. We begin by describing the classical formulation of the doctrine by Aristotle, as presented in the Nicomachean Ethics. We also introduce the fundamental elements that govern the matrices of concepts (Franceschi 2002). We then propose a new formulation of the doctrine of the mean, directly derived from the very structure of the matrices of concepts. We also compare the present formulation of the doctrine of the mean with that of Aristotle, highlighting the similarities and differences. We further offer an interpretation of the Aristotelian formulation of the doctrine of the mean. Finally, we demonstrate how the neo-Aristotelian version of the doctrine of the mean addresses several objections, particularly those traditionally raised against its Aristotelian version.

English translation and postprint of a paper originally published in French under the title 'Une classe de concepts' in Semiotica (2002), vol. 139, pp.121-3. In this article, I aim to develop the construction of a general class of concepts, which notably integrates a number of commonly used polarized opposites. The starting point of this construction does not lie in conventional, lexicalized concepts—that is, concepts for which there exists a corresponding word in the everyday language of a given language. On the contrary, the approach guiding the construction of this class of concepts involves an abstract definition of the latter, without consideration of whether the corresponding concepts are lexicalized or not. Once such a construction is achieved, it becomes possible to verify that the concepts thus constructed do indeed correspond to lexicalized concepts, while others cannot be matched with any word in everyday language. Ultimately, this construction allows for the proposal of a taxonomy of concepts that serves as an alternative to the one based on the semiotic square defined by Greimas.

Nous proposons dans cet article des éléments nouveaux pour l’interprétation de la doctrine d’Héraclite, concernant en particulier le rôle de l’opposition des contraires en tant que générateur d’harmonie, mentionné dans les Fragments 8 et 51. Cette interprétation est basée sur l’outil conceptuel que constituent les matrices de concepts. Après avoir décrit les éléments fondamentaux qui régissent ces dernières, nous nous attachons à définir dans ce cadre conceptuel les notions d’opposition et de contraire, ainsi que d’harmonie. Cela permet de fournir une interprétation ainsi qu’une justification pour la doctrine spécifique d’Héraclite, selon laquelle l’opposition des contraires est génératrice d’harmonie.

Nous proposons dans cet article une caractérisation, à notre connaissance, nouvelle, d’une distorsion cognitive : la requalification dans le même pôle. Une telle caractérisation prend place au sein du modèle général des distorsions cognitives (Franceschi, 2007). Nous commençons par définir un modèle étendu des distorsions cognitives, intégrant les éléments du cadre conceptuel des matrices de concepts (Franceschi, 2002), afin de permettre une définition élargie du système de taxons. Nous nous attachons ensuite à définir la requalification dans le même pôle et à la distinguer d’une distorsion cognitive voisine : la requalification dans l’autre pôle.

I will now describe several applications of the theory of n-universes across different probabilistic scenarios. First, I will explain how n-universes can extend the probability spaces used in traditional probability theory. These extended probability spaces enable more refined modelling of complex probabilistic situations and align more intuitively with our perceptions of the physical universe. Next, I will demonstrate the use of n-universes as a methodological tool through two thought experiments described by John Leslie. Finally, I will model Goodman's paradox within the framework of n-universes, showing how they closely resemble Goodmanian worlds.

In a previous paper (Compléments pour une théorie des distorsions cognitives, Journal de Thérapie Comportementale et Cognitive, 2007), we introduced some elements aimed at contributing to a general theory of cognitive distortions. Based on the reference class, the duality and the system of taxa, these elements allow to define the general cognitive distortions as well as the specific cognitive distortions. This model is extended here to the description of two other classical cognitive distortions: over-generalization and mislabeling. The definition of the two latter cognitive distortions is based on preliminary distinction between three levels of reasoning: primary, secondary and ternary pathogenic arguments. The latter analysis also leads to define two other cognitive distortions which insert themselves into this framework: ill-grounded inductive projection and confirmation bias.

Dans cet article, nous présentons une formulation néo-aristotélicienne de la doctrine du juste milieu. Nous commençons par décrire la formulation classique de la doctrine par Aristote, telle qu'elle est exposée dans l’Éthique à Nicomaque. Nous présentons en outre les éléments fondamentaux qui régissent les matrices de concepts (Franceschi 2002). Nous proposons ensuite une nouvelle formulation de la doctrine du juste milieu, directement dérivée de la structure-même des matrices de concepts. Nous comparons également la présente formulation de la doctrine du juste milieu avec celle d'Aristote, en mettant en évidence les points communs et les différences. Nous proposons aussi une interprétation de la formulation aristotélicienne de la doctrine du juste milieu. Enfin, nous montrons comment la version néo-aristotélicienne de la doctrine du juste milieu permet de répondre à plusieurs objections, et notamment à celles qui ont été classiquement soulevées à l’encontre de sa version aristotélicienne.

This article aims to contribute to cognitive therapy of polythematic delusions by proposing a preliminary step to the implementation of traditional cognitive therapy, based on the construction of alternative hypotheses to delusions and testing of the latter. This additional step resides in the construction in the patient of the necessary skills to use the general experimentalist method of knowledge acquisition. Such an approach is based on the contrast between the logico-theoretical and the experimentalist turn of mind. Some elements such as to allow any such construction in the patient are then described and analyzed.

Schizophrenia is often associated with other physical and mental problems. Generalized anxiety disorder is notably one of the comorbid disorders which is often linked to schizophrenia. The association of polythematic delusions and of ideas resulting from generalized anxiety disorder complicates the exercise of the corresponding cognitive therapy, for the resulting ideas are most often inextricably intertwined. In what follows, we endeavour to propose a methodology for the differential treatment of polythematic delusions inherent to schizophrenia when combined with ideas originating from generalized anxiety disorder. We propose, with regard to the corresponding content of delusions, an analysis which allows under certain conditions, to separate the content associated with polythematic delusions and the one that relates to generalized anxiety disorder, in order to facilitate the exercise of the corresponding cognitive therapy.

English translation of an article originally published in French in Liber Amicorum Pascal Engel, J. Dutant, G. Fassio & A. Meylan (eds.), University of Geneva, 2014, pp. 581-608. In what follows, I strive to present the elements of a philosophical doctrine, which can be defined as dialectical contextualism. I proceed first to define the elements of this doctrine: dualities and polar contraries, the principle of dialectical indifference and the one-sidedness bias. I emphasize then the special importance of this doctrine in one specific field of meta-philosophy: the methodology for solving philosophical paradoxes. Finally, I describe several applications of this methodology on the following paradoxes: Hempel's paradox, the surprise examination paradox and the Doomsday Argument.

In a previous paper (Compléments pour une théorie des distorsions cognitives, Journal de Thérapie Comportementale et Cognitive, 2007), we did present some elements aimed at contributing to a general theory of cognitive distortions. Based on the reference class, the duality and the system of taxa, these elements led to distinguish between the general cognitive distortions (dichotomous reasoning, disqualification of one pole, minimization, maximization) and the specific cognitive distortions (disqualifying the positive, selective abstraction, catastrophism). By also distinguishing between three levels of reasoning – the instantiation stage, the interpretation stage and the generalization stage – we did also define two other cognitive distortions: over-generalization and mislabeling (Théorie des distorsions cognitives : la sur-généralisation et l'étiquetage, Journal de Thérapie Comportementale et Cognitive, 2009). We currently extend this model to another classical cognitive distortion: personalization.

In a previous paper (Compléments pour une théorie des distorsions cognitives, Journal de Thérapie Comportementale et Cognitive, 2007), we did present some elements aimed at contributing to a general theory of cognitive distortions. The latter elements, based on the reference class, the duality and the system of taxa, are applied here to generalised anxiety disorder. This allows to describe, on the one hand, the specific distortions related to generalised anxiety disorder, consistently with recent work emphasising the role played by uncertain situations with regard to future events. On the second hand, these elements allow to define one type of structured reasoning, of inductive nature, which contributes to the formation and maintenance of anxious ideas.

Dans ce qui suit, je m'attache à présenter les éléments d'une doctrine philosophique, qui peut être définie comme un contextualisme dialectique. Je m'efforce tout d'abord de définir les éléments constitutifs de cette doctrine, à travers les dualités et pôles duaux, le principe d'indifférence dialectique et le biais d'uni-polarisation. Je m'attache ensuite à souligner l'intérêt spécifique de cette doctrine au sein d'un domaine particulier de la méta-philosophie : la méthodologie utilisée pour la résolution des paradoxes philosophiques. Je décris enfin une application de cette dernière aux paradoxes suivants : le paradoxe de Hempel, le paradoxe de l'examen-surprise et l'argument de l'Apocalypse.

We propose in this article some new elements for the interpretation of Heraclitus' doctrine, concerning in particular the role of the opposition of contraries as generator of harmony, that results from Fragments 8DK and 51DK. This interpretation is based on the conceptual tool of matrices of concepts. After having described the basic elements that govern the latter, we set out to define in this conceptual framework the notions of opposition and contrary, as well as of harmony. This allows us to give an interpretation and also a justification of Heraclitus' specific doctrine, according to which the opposition of contraries generates harmony.

Attribué à Brandon Carter, l' argument de l'Apocalypse Doomsday Argument , soit DA, dans ce qui suit) a été décrit par John Leslie (1992). On peut formuler ainsi cet argument. Soit A l'événement: l'Apocalypse se produira avant l'an 2150 ; et B l'événement: l'Apocalypse ne se produira pas avant 2150 . Soit également Z l'événement: j'ai connu les années 1990 . On peut par ailleurs estimer à 40 milliards le nombre d'humains ayant existé depuis la naissance de l'humanité, jusqu'à notre époque: soit H1996 un tel nombre. On peut ainsi admettre, de manière raisonnable, qu'un humain sur dix, dans le cas de l'événement..

Je m'attache dans le présent article à élaborer la construction d'une classe générale de concepts, qui intègre notamment un certain nombre de contraires polarisés d'usage courant. Le point de départ de cette construction ne réside pas dans des concepts usuels, lexicalisés, c'est-à-dire pour lesquels il existe un mot correspondant dans le langage courant propre à une langue donnée. A l'inverse, la démarche qui préside à la construction de la présente classe de concepts consiste dans une définition abstraite de cette dernière, sans considération du fait que les concepts correspondants soient ou non lexicalisés. Une fois une telle construction réalisée, on est alors à même de vérifier que les concepts ainsi construits correspondent effectivement à des concepts lexicalisés, alors que d'autres ne peuvent être mis en correspondance avec aucun mot du langage courant. Finalement, la présente construction permet de proposer une taxinomie de concepts qui constitue une alternative à celle basée sur le carré sémiotique (semiotic square) défini par Greimas

In Franceschi (2002), I presented a theory based on the matrices of concepts aiming at providing an alternative to the classification proposed by Greimas, in the field of paradigmatic analysis. The problem of specifying the relationships of the concepts of love, hate and indifference, arises in this construction. I attach myself to describe the problem of the love-hate-indifference relationships in detail, and several solutions that have been proposed to solve it. Finally I expose a solution to this problem, based on an extension of the theory of matrices of concepts.

Several philosophical problems are based on an analogy between a real situation and a probabilistic model. Such problems are based on urn analogies. The present dissertation aims to describe and implement a methodology oriented towards the resolution of philosophical problems based on an urn analogy. This methodology is based on the use of the n-universes. To this end, I describe first the n-universes in a detailed way. I also discuss the difficulties of the theory of n-universes related to the demultiplication of the criteria and to the relation one/many between the objects and a given criterion. On the one hand, I present an application of the framework of n-universes to the Doomsday argument and to the problems recently appeared in the literature in keeping with the Doomsday argument. My concern is also with showing how the application of the framework of n-universes to several problems and thought experiments related to the Doomsday argument helps clarifying the problem data and making disappear the associated ambiguity. I present then an analysis of the following problems related to the Doomsday argument: the two urn case, God's Coin Toss, the Sleeping Beauty Problem, the Presumptuous Philosopher, Lazy Adam, and the Shooting-Room Paradox. I present lastly a solution to the Doomsday argument, based on a third route, by contrast to two types of solutions classically described. On the other hand, I present an application of the framework of n-universes to Goodman's paradox. I replace first Goodman's statement in the framework of n-universes. I propose then a solution to the paradox, based on a distinction between two different modelizations of Goodman's statement in two structurally different n-universes

English translation of a paper originally published in French in the Canadian Journal of Philosophy under the title 'Comment l'urne de Carter et Leslie se déverse dans celle de Hempel'. In this paper, I present firstly a solution to Hempel's Problem. I recall secondly the solution to the Doomsday Argument described in my previous Une Solution pour l'Argument de l'Apocalypse (Canadian Journal of Philosophy, 1998) and remark that both solutions are based on a similar line of reasoning. I show thirdly that the Doomsday Argument can be reduced to the core of Hempel's Problem.
