Paul Russell is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia, where he taught from 1987-2022.
He has also been an invited Assistant Professor at Virginia (1988), an invited Assistant Professor at Stanford (1989-1990), and an invited Associate Professor at Pittsburgh (1996-1997). In 2005 he was a Kenan Distinguished Visitor at the Univesity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

From 2015-2025 he was Director of the Lund|Gothenburg Responsibility Project. During this time he held half-time positions in Sweden as Professor of Philosophy at Gothenburg (2015-2017) and Lund (2018-2025). These appointments were funded by a major grant ($8.5 million/80 million SEK) from the Swedish Research Council "for international recruitment of leading researchers".
