Este manual sobre tecnologías para un envejecimiento activo y saludable, también conocido como Vida Asistida Activa (Active Assisted Living – AAL en sus siglas en inglés), ha sido creado como parte de la Acción COST GoodBrother, que se ha llevado a cabo desde 2020 hasta 2024. Las Acciones COST son programas de investigación europeos que promueven la colaboración internacional, uniendo a investigadores, profesionales e instituciones para abordar desafíos sociales importantes. GoodBrother se ha centrado en las cuestiones éticas y de privacidad relacionadas con la monitorización empleando cámaras y micrófonos en entornos de provisión de cuidados. El objetivo ha sido garantizar que, mientras las tecnologías AAL ayudan a las personas mayores y a los individuos vulnerables, sus derechos de privacidad y protección de datos se mantengan como una prioridad. This booklet on Active Assisted Living (AAL) technologies has been created as part of the GoodBrother COST Action, which has run from 2020 to 2024. COST Actions are European research programs that promote collaboration across borders, uniting researchers, professionals, and institutions to address key societal challenges. GoodBrother focused on ethical and privacy concerns surrounding video and audio monitoring in care settings. The aim was to ensure that while AAL technologies help older adults and vulnerable individuals, their privacy and data protection rights remain a top priority. This booklet is designed to guide you through the role that AAL technologies play in improving the quality of life for older adults, caregivers, and people with disabilities. AAL technologies offer tools for those facing cognitive or physical challenges. They can enhance independence, assist with daily routines, and promote a safer living environment. However, the rise of these technologies also brings important questions about data protection and user autonomy.

In almost all countries, electricity reform has been a part of wider policies towards a liberal market economy. The former vertically integrated electricity utilities were restructured and unbundled by a reform process that introduced competition into generation, wholesale, and retail segments of the industry. The transmission and distribution businesses that were either regional or national monopolies have been subjected to regulation by an independent regulator. Other common elements of the reforms include the introduction of wholesale and spot power markets, the establishment of impartial market and system operators, the removal of restrictions on third party access to grids and, in some cases, privatization.When talking about electricity markets one usually refers to active power markets paying less attention to ancillary services, namely to reactive power/voltage control. This usually leads to a chronological sequence of activities that may lead to inefficiencies because active and reactive powers are coupled given the capability diagram of synchronous generators, the AC power flow equations and the branch thermal limits.The operational impacts of intermittent generation related to renewable resources show the multiple challenges that most power systems have to face. This is already noticeable in countries that currently have a large penetration of wind and solar production. While microgrids can be a source of renewable and reliable energy for utility distribution systems, significant challenges exist in stable operation and meeting the economic goals of the microgrid owners.Thus, microgrids represent a new paradigm for the operation of distribution systems and there are several advantages as well as challenges regarding their development. One of the advantages is related to the participation of microgrid agents in electricity markets and in the provision of ancillary services.In this chapter we describe an optimization model to allocate ancillary services among microgrid agents. The ancillary services are reactive power/voltage control, active loss balancing, and demand interruption. This model assumes that microgrid agents participate in the day-ahead market by sending their bids to the microgrid central controller that acts as an interface with the market operator. Once the market operator returns the economic dispatch of the microgrid agents, the MGCC checks its technical feasibility and activates an adjustment market to change the initial schedule and to allocate ancillary services. The model admits that voltage and branch flow limits are modeled in a soft way using fuzzy set concepts.

Therefore, metering and behind the meter monitoring systems have a crucial role in the exploitation of this potential in the customer side.A significant disadvantage of traditional meters is the fact that they do not provide detailed information to the customers, which is achieved with the help of smart meters. A smart meter allows the customers to have access to the information about electricity consumption of the appliances in their houses. The acceptance of smart meters by customers is the fundamental step to achieve the potential carbon emission reductions that are provided by the use of advanced metering infrastructures.The smart meter is an advanced energy meter that measures consumption of electrical energy such as a traditional meter but also provides additional information in real time, making it the key element of the new energy demand management system. Integration of smart meters into electricity grids implies the implementation of several technologies, depending on the features that each situation request. The design of a smart meter has been in constant development since it is increasingly necessary to satisfy both the requirements of the utility company and those of the customer. Therefore, smart metering provides benefits to the energy utilities optimizing their business, and beyond that it can provide advantages to the final customers.All over the world many smart metering projects have been developed. However, it is still not entirely clear which are the associated costs, the characteristics, and the mechanisms internal to projects that bring advantages and benefits for the different concerned parties. The smart metering methods and the communication technologies used in smart grid are being substantially studied due to widespread applications of smart grid. The monitoring and control processes are largely used in industrial systems. Nevertheless, the energy management requirements at service supplier and customer promoted the evolution of smart grid and consequently the development of microgrids.This chapter discusses various characteristics and technologies that can be integrated with a smart meter for smart grids and microgrids uses. In fact, placement of smart meters needs proper selection and implementation of a communication network fulfilling the security standards of smart grid/microgrid communication. This chapter outlines various issues and challenges involved in design, deployment, utilization, and maintenance of the smart metering infrastructure.

A microgrid embraces a low-voltage distribution grid with distributed energy resources and controllable loads. In the last years, there has been a growing awareness in exploiting microgrids to facilitate DER integration in electric power systems as well as to improve reliability and power quality in distribution grids. A microgrid can operate connected to the upstream medium voltage grid—utility grid—or islanded in a controlled and coordinated way. A major challenge associated with the implementation of microgrids is to design a suitable protection system scheme for different operating conditions. To overcome this challenge, different approaches have been proposed in the literature.The protection systems applied at microgrids must work both in utility grid faults and microgrid faults. Faults on the utility grid could lead to a protection response that isolates the microgrid from the utility grid as fast as required to keep the microgrid safety. On the other hand, faults in the own microgrid require the smallest sector removal of the microgrid to isolate the fault. Due to the presence of several DER in microgrids, the protection systems are also needed to cope with the bidirectional energy flows. Thus, the traditional protection devices and standard solid-state relays are designed for selectivity purposes, making them inapt to ensure the protection of microgrids. These protection devices do not provide flexibility for setting the tripping characteristics neither the current direction sensitivity feature.Some problems related to protections sensitivity and selectivity arises when a microgrid is in islanded operation. Thus, this new paradigm of distribution facilities requires a protection system based on microprocessor relaying and communications. Protecting microgrids in both modes can be achieved by using different communication architectures associated with protections. Using centralized or distributed architectures means that the relay protection settings are modified centrally or locally regarding microgrid operating conditions.This chapter aims to provide the key highlights of the available protection schemes used to address microgrid protection issues.
