We show that if among the tested hypotheses the number of true hypotheses is not equal to the number of false hypotheses, then Neyman-Pearson theory of testing hypotheses does not warrant minimal epistemic reliability (the feature of driving to true conclusions more often than to false ones). We also argue that N-P does not protect from the possible negative effects of the pragmatic value-laden unequal setting of error probabilities on N-P’s epistemic reliability. Most importantly, we argue that in the case of a negative impact no methodological adjustment is available to neutralize it, so in such cases the discussed pragmatic-value-ladenness of N-P inevitably compromises the goal of attaining truth.

Bayesian confirmation theory is conceived here as a model of inductive inference. A methodological facet of Goodman’s grue paradox (MWP) constitutes a major difficulty for this theory. This could only be evaded on the grounds of philosophical assumptions such as the existence of laws of nature or natural kinds. These would unwittingly bias the theory towards some scientific hypotheses which would contradict the character of the theory. The analysis of J. Earman’s and R. Chuaqui’s formal frameworks demonstrates, however, that weaker assumptions, e.g. seemingly anti-realist admittance of the existence of symmetries alone, will not suffice to cope with (MWP). Finally then Bayesian confirmation theory faces a dilemma: either to allow for ad-hocness in narrowing down the class of its models or to defend a version of scientific realism, e.g. structural realism.

Building on our diverse research traditions in the study of reasoning, language and communication, the Polish School of Argumentation integrates various disciplines and institutions across Poland in which scholars are dedicated to understanding the phenomenon of the force of argument. Our primary goal is to craft a methodological programme and establish organisational infrastructure: this is the first key step in facilitating and fostering our research movement, which joins people with a common research focus, complementary skills and an enthusiasm to work together. This statement—the Manifesto—lays the foundations for the research programme of the Polish School of Argumentation.

Prace Rudolfa Carnapa w zakresie semantyki stanowiły podstawę do zdefiniowania najważniejszych pojęć w jego logice indukcji, niezbędnych dla ilościowego pojęcia stopnia konfirmacji. Można więc założyć, że koncepcja semantyki Carnapa znacząco wpłynęła na jego rozwiązania w logice indukcji. Dotychczas jednak niewiele uwagi poświęcono temu zagadnieniu. Niedawna publikacja Jana Woleńskiego (2021), przedstawiająca definicję konfirmacji alternatywną do podanej przez Carnapa i wykorzystująca inne kategorie semantyczne (zaczerpnięte z prac Alfreda Tarskiego), dostarcza ważnych spostrzeżeń na wspomniany temat. Niniejszy artykuł referuje propozycję Woleńskiego i wynikające z niej wnioski dotyczące Carnapowskiej teorii konfirmacji. Następnie przedstawiono pewne rozbieżności w koncepcji semantyki Carnapa w stosunku do koncepcji Tarskiego. Omówione zostały również podstawowe historyczne źródła koncepcji Carnapa, w szczególności kategoria zakresu (niem. Spielraum). Dokonana przez Carnapa modyfikacja pierwotnych determinacji tej kategorii wprowadzonej przez Johannesa von Kriesa wydaje się leżeć u podstaw problemów jego teorii konfirmacji i znajdować swoją motywację w jego okresie składniowym.

Zakład Pascala jest współcześnie analizowany jako argument (lub zestaw argumen-tów), którego celem jest uzasadnienie istnienia Boga. Właściwym podejściem do za-kładu Pascala miałaby być jego racjonalna rekonstrukcja, obejmująca tylko określony fragment – tzw. zakład matematyczny – większej całości zatytułowanej przez Blaise’a Pascala Infini rien. Przy zastosowaniu Hansa Reichenbacha uproszczonego ujęcia racjonalnej rekonstrukcji, taka procedura wymaga oddzielenia kontekstu odkrycia od kontekstu uzasadnienia i rekonstrukcji uzasadnienia zaprezentowanego w tym ostatnim kontekście. Odniesieniem dla niniejszego tekstu jest w szczególności kanoniczna racjonalna rekonstrukcja zakładu Pascala, jaką zaproponował Ian Hacking. Wykorzys-tanie przez niego współczesnych pojęć teorii decyzji stało się punktem wyjścia dla toczonych aktualnie dyskusji na temat zakładu Pascala. Dzięki ukazaniu pełniejszego kontekstu fragmentu Myśli Pascala zatytułowanego Infini rien, którego słynny zakład jest tylko częścią, niniejszy tekst wskazuje istotne rozbieżności między interpretacją zakładu narzucaną przez tego rodzaju racjonalną rekonstrukcję a źródłową intencją Pascala. Nie jest celem niniejszego tekstu podważenie wartości racjonalnych rekonstrukcji tego rodzaju argumentacji za istnieniem Boga, lecz pokazanie ich nieadekwatności jako drogi do odczytania źródłowej intencji autora Infini rien.

Artykuł naświetla rzadko komentowane tematy w odniesieniu do prac Stanisława Judyckiego, zwracając szczególnie uwagę na problem znaków wieczności w doświadczeniu doczesnym. Dla pełniejszego ich wydobycia przywołuje nieoczywiste konteksty spoza kultury zachodniej, które jednak istotnie wpisują się w cały dorobek intelektualny Stanisława Judyckiego. Oprócz sformułowania problemu, szczególnej oryginalności upatrujemy w przezwyciężeniu przez niego rzekomo konstytutywnej więzi filozofii podmiotu z ideą postępu. Efektem są unikatowe wglądy w sytuację egzystencjalną człowieka w jego relacji do Boga.

The paper outlines and discusses the major tenets of moderately pluralistic methodology. The latter is juxtaposed to J. Życiński’s principle of natural interdisciplinarity. It instantiates scientific pluralism as a domain-specific agenda for research. The symbolic and causal understanding are integrated in this methodological conception by means of a specific kind of counterfactual reasoning, which is coined the delimiting counterfactual. It makes the moderately pluralistic methodology applicable to non-experimental research. Streszczenie Tytuł: “Umiarkowanie pluralistyczna metodologia” Artykuł prezentuje i omawia zasadnicze założenia koncepcji umiarkowanie pluralistycznej metodologii. Ta ostatnia jest zbieżna z J. Życińskiego zasadą naturalności interdyscyplinarnej. Reprezenuje ona szeroko rozumiany nurt pluralizmu naukowego w zakresie sposobu prowadzenia badań w danej dziedzinie. W tej koncepcji połączone są dwa poziomy rozumienia symboliczny i przyczynowy za pomocą swoistego rodzaju wnioskowań kontrfaktycznych, określonych tu jako rozgraniczających wnioskowań kontrfaktycznych. The paper focuses on knowledge generation, a topic frequently overlooked in the traditional debates in epistemology and philosophy of science. We focus on investigation as the primary process generating knowledge and its products. Investigation is taken as a generalization of the research process that includes similar knowledge-generating practices in aboriginal communities. To characterize the complexity of investigation processes and their products we go beyond traditional epistemological characterization of knowledge in terms of mental states and turn to the concept of routine. Investigation processes share a common symbolic representation form which we call here a knowledge thread. The dynamics of the knowledge thread may be characterized by two intertwined tiers: cognitive and institutional. Using examples from our previous studies, especially on the recent discovery of microRNAs in molecular biology, we illustrate the dynamics of threads and claim that it is susceptible to the social network analysis which, however, requires insightful applications and sound interpretation of the results. Such an interpretation, as we suggest, may further be elaborated on the grounds of anthropological theories of distributed agency and distributed cognition.

We analyse the issue of using prior information in frequentist statistical inference. For that purpose, we scrutinise different kinds of sampling designs in Jerzy Neyman’s theory to reveal a variety of ways to explicitly and objectively engage with prior information. Further, we turn to the debate on sampling paradigms (design-based vs. model-based approaches) to argue that Neyman’s theory supports an argument for the intermediate approach in the frequentism vs. Bayesianism debate. We also demonstrate that Neyman’s theory, by allowing non-epistemic values to influence evidence collection and formulation of statistical conclusions, does not compromise the epistemic reliability of the procedures and may improve it. This undermines the value-free ideal of scientific inference.

Kawalec's monograph is a novel defence of the programme of inductive logic, developed initially by Rudolf Carnap in the 1950s and Jaakko Hintikka in the 1960s. It revives inductive logic by bringing out the underlying epistemology. The main strength of the work is its link between inductive logic and contemporary discussions of epistemology. Through this perspective the author succeeds to shed new light on the significance of inductive logic. The resulting structural reliabilist theory propounds the view that justification supervenes on syntactic and semantic properties of sentences as justification-bearers. The claim is made that this sets up a genuine alternative to the prevailing theories of justification. Kawalec substantiates this claim by confronting structural reliabilism with a number of epistemological problems. Kawalec writes in a clear manner, makes his theses and arguments explicit, and gives ample bibliographical references.

In this work, we explore the epistemic import of the value-ladenness of Neyman-Pearson’s Theory of Testing Hypotheses by reconstructing and extending Daniel Steel’s argument for the legitimate influence of pragmatic values on scientific inference. We focus on how to properly understand N-P’s pragmatic value-ladenness and the epistemic reliability of N-P. We develop an account of the twofold influence of pragmatic values on N-P’s epistemic reliability and replicability. We refer to these two distinguished aspects as “direct” and “indirect”. We discuss the replicability of experiments in terms of the indirect aspect and the replicability of outcomes in terms of the direct aspect. We argue that the influence of pragmatic values is beneficial to N-P’s epistemic reliability and replicability indirectly. We show that while the direct influence of pragmatic values can be beneficial, its negative effects on reliability and replicability are also unavoidable in some cases, with the direct and indirect aspects possibly being incongruent.

The widespread particularist account of the onset of molecular biology that identifies it with the discovery of the DNA structure in 1953 has been recently contested. The paper contributes to this debate by focusing on a more recent discovery of small noncoding RNAs. First, it outlines a particularist account of the microRNAs discovery and the origins of the particularist predilection of the modern scientometric studies of science dynamics. Next, it discusses its limitations and proposes an alternative, modified processualist account of the discovery. In the final part, the paper applies this approach to unravel network dynamics of the research on the first two microRNAs that were discovered, namely lin-4 and let-7.

This paper attempts to assess the viability of M. Frápolli’s pragmatic account of scientific truth in the context of moderately pluralistic view of research process. Mixed-methods approach, which embodies the moderately pluralistic view in the social sciences, combines various methods, i.e. quantitative and qualitative, within a single research process in order to cross-validate and integrate the results into a coherent answer to the initial problem. Prima facie the pragmatic account of scientific truth squares well with the pragmatic justification of the mixed-methods approach, addressing the objections on content incommensurability or meaning ambigui- ties. However, as I argue, the pragmatic account of truth may not be able to significantly contribute to resolve the problem of ‘institutionalized assertion of falsehood’, unless it will accommodate some form of moderately pluralistic view of the research process allowing for cross-validation of tentative assertion of the purported scientific truth.
