This article reexamines Plato’s critique of writing in the Phaedrus, arguing that it considers writing from three distinct angles: reading (reception), the written text (medium), and writing (emission). Initially, I explore how ancient Greek παιδεραστία influenced the conceptualisation of written communication, portraying the writer as a lover who subdues the reader, as if he were a passive beloved. Next, I address the text as a medium of expression, noting that its structural defects (e.g., fixedness and helplessness) are also present in some forms of oral communication, such as myth-telling and epideictic oratory. In this sense, my analysis demonstrates that the distinction between oral and written communication is a matter of degree rather than kind. Finally, I describe how the Phaedrus acknowledges that a writer can be a philosopher, provided that they can defend their written arguments and show that actual knowledge resides within their soul.

Cet article analyse le développement dramatique du Phèdre de Platon à la lumière du topos littéraire du choix des vies, en particulier par le prisme d’une comparaison étroite avec Le Choix d’Héraclès, l’apologue attribué à Prodicus dans les Mémorables de Xénophon. Je soutiens que, de cette façon, on peut mieux apprécier le contexte littéraire du dilemme dramatique auquel est confronté Phèdre dans le dialogue. Dans mon analyse, Phèdre est exposé à deux propositions contradictoires sur la manière de conduire sa vie. Lysias représente la voie de la rhétorique conventionnelle et une conception égoïste de l’amour. En revanche, Socrate préconise la voie de la philosophie, qui redéfinit la rhétorique et défend une idée de l’amour d’inspiration divine. Comme Héraclès, Phèdre est dans un état d’aporie, oscillant entre des chemins de vie contrastés. L’innovation de Platon consiste à s’approprier ce topos pour défendre la poursuite de la connaissance comme la valeur la plus élevée et la vie du philosophe comme la plus digne d’être choisie. Ainsi, on comprend mieux l’intention de Socrate de persuader Phèdre et s’il réussit dans son entreprise.

Neste artigo, concentro-me sobre o problema da persuasão na obra de Platão e exponho as suas implicações filosóficas, políticas e educacionais. Começo traçando um panorama da persuasão na Grécia Antiga, tanto da atividade persuasiva quanto da figura mítica da deusa Persuasão. Depois, detenho-me sobre alguns casos emblemáticos do fracasso da persuasão socrática. Em seguida, viso reconstruir algumas causas que despontam nos diálogos platônicos para explicar o fracasso da persuasão socrática. Por fim, considero a reivindicação da retórica para a filosofia, defendida e desenvolvida no Fedro, como uma resposta diante do impasse de que a verdade não é autoevidente e, dessa forma, não pode ser transmitida imediata e mecanicamente de uma alma para outra.

Comentadores de Platão tendem a assumir que o filósofo alterou sua percepção sobre a retórica no decurso do tempo. Geralmente, tais comentadores se concentram nas críticas de Sócrates à retórica no Górgias e na reivindicação de uma retórica filosófica no Fedro para constatar uma descontinuidade fundamental no tratamento platônico à retórica. De maneira oposta, o meu objetivo será demonstrar uma continuidade fundamental nas considerações platônicas sobre a retórica, suplantando as evidências textuais comumente analisadas neste debate com algumas passagens da Apologia, Banquete e Leis. Tanto num diálogo inicial, como a Apologia, quanto num muito posterior, como as Leis, está em operação o mesmo procedimento: uma distinção cuidadosa entre uma boa e uma má retórica. Basicamente, se a retórica se imbuir de valores filosóficos e se orientar pelo bem da alma do interlocutor, então é acolhida por Platão. Em contrapartida, se a retórica rejeitar tais valores e orientação, então é condenada.

This book brings together a number of researchers of different nationalities to reflect on religion and philosophy in ancient Greece. These scholars have been convened by the Brazilian research group Delphos and discuss, in particular, how religious and philosophical thought intertwined during this period. Among the papers collected here, several are devoted to epic and philosophical literature before Plato. The others deal, alongside this great classical philosopher, with Aristotle and Philo of Alexandria. These contributions allow us to recognise how the vision of the cosmos, metaphysics and human life are intertwined in Greek thought. A journey is made from traditional Greek religion to its philosophical reinterpretations, reaching as far as the monotheistic God of Judaism made known in the Hellenic language. The nature of the cosmos, investigated scientifically, is no stranger to the Greeks' view of the divine, but neither is ethics, with all its demands. Thus, these studies provide a kaleidoscopic view of the various points of view from which nature, the human condition and divinity are approached through the eyes of ancient Greek literature.

I argue that the opening line of the _Phaedrus_ proleptically encapsulates the major themes of the dialogue and that paying attention to the opening line enables us to strengthen the identification of psychagogy as the key unifying thread of the whole dialogue. In particular, I argue that the opening line foreshadows the quarrel between Lysias and Socrates over the practical guidance of Phaedrus’ soul; the prominence of friendship in the philosophical form of life; the pertinence of Socrates’ one-on-one, custom-built speeches, vis-à-vis the later conceptualization of rhetoric; the definition of the soul as a source of never-ending movement; as well as the origin (_arché_) and destiny (_télos_) of human souls, following the lines of the Palinode.

Este artigo compara e contrasta dois conceitos filosóficos provenientes de distintas linhagens de pensamento: de um lado, o _clinamen _de Lucrécio; do outro, o _conatus _de Espinosa. O que fomentou minha pesquisa foi uma conjugação dessas noções tal como proposto por Deleuze no apêndice de seu _Logique du sens_. Nesse sentido, a primeira seção está orientada tendo em vista uma elucidação da filosofia de Lucrécio — consequentemente, também a de Epicuro — e, especificamente, uma interpretação do desvio dos átomos ou _clinamen_ em combinação com o tópico da liberdade. A segunda seção se dedica a clarificar a metafísica de Espinosa e a acomodação do tema da liberdade dentro de seu robusto enquadramento necessitário, entrelaçado com o motivo do _conatus _ou esforço de auto-preservação. Contra a leiture de Deleuze, entretanto, argumentarei que _clinamen _e _conatus _pertencem à sistemas metafísicos que são praticamente incompatíveis e que corroboram um entendimento diferente sobre liberdade e necessidade.
