My research primarily focuses on Early Modern philosophy, especially the philosophy of George Berkeley, and is motivated by two questions:

  • What does it mean for one thing to represent another?
  • What role did debates about representation, and associated issues like intentionality and language, play in the development of Early Modern thought?

I am especially interested in Berkeley, Margaret Cavendish, John Sergeant, and Thomas Reid. Much of my research is motivated by a methodoligical commitment to using historical figures who lie outside the established canon to inform the story we tell about the Early Modern period.
