The concept of common sense plays only a marginal role in Frankfurt School critical theory, despite its egalitarian and emancipatory promise. Focusing on Adorno, this article argues that his scattered reflections reveal both a negative, conformist dimension of common sense and a fragile, yet real, emancipatory potential. Through analyses of ‘Opinion Delusion Society’ and Minima Moralia, the article reconstructs Adorno’s critique of common sense as a socially conditioned form of ‘common nonsense’ that substitutes conformity and power for truth, blurring the line between opinion and knowledge. It then turns to Kant’s account of sensus communis in §40 of the Critique of the Power of Judgment to clarify how a procedural, reflective, and universalizing capacity might resist the pathologies Adorno identifies. By bringing Kant’s maxims of thinking into dialogue with Adorno’s social critique, the article outlines a procedural, non-foundational model of common sense grounded in communicative openness, mutual recognition, and the capacity to disagree without coercion. While not offering a full critical theory of common sense, it proposes the conceptual groundwork for such a project – an urgent task in light of contemporary political appeals to common sense.

Seit ihrer Entstehung ging es der kritischen Theorie in ihren unterschiedlichen Ausführungen stets darum, die bestehende Gesellschaft mit ihren normativen Ordnungen zu kritisieren. Dabei differenzierten sich die unterschiedlichen Formen der kritischen Theorie hinsichtlich verschiedener Aspekte aus: Wurde die kapitalistische Gesellschaft in der frühen kritischen Theorie ausgehend von Hegel und Marx vor allem in ihrer Produktionsweise kritisiert, so rückten später die in ihr wirksamen Verständigungs- und Anerkennungsverhältnisse in den Vordergrund. Mit der Veränderung des Gegenstandsbereichs veränderten sich jedoch auch die normativen Maßstäbe der Kritik, wodurch die Frage nach den Gründen, aus denen Kritik geübt wird, für das Selbstverständnis der kritischen Theorie eine bedeutende Rolle spielt. Der vorliegende Band geht den unterschiedlichen Begründungsformen von Kritik nach, die sich in klassischen und gegenwärtigen kritischen Theorien finden lassen. Dabei werden sowohl zu klassischen Positionen der Frankfurter Schule (Adorno, Habermas, Honneth), zu Reaktualisierungen kantianischer, hegelianischer und marxistischer Theorien als auch zu aktuellen Ansätzen des Critical Realism und des Perfektionismus Beiträge geliefert. Der Leser findet einen differenzierten Überblick über die unterschiedlichen Begründungsstrategien kritischer Theorien und erfährt, inwiefern die kritische Theorie einen unverzichtbaren Beitrag zur Philosophie und Gesellschaftstheorie der Gegenwart darstellt. The neuroscientific naturalism poses a challenge to any philosophical attempt to determine human nature. Although the neurosciences describe the cognitive capacities of human beings as something that is socially acquired, they lack adequate reflection on the social forms in which these capacities emerge and thereby tend to naturalize not only human beings, but society as a whole. In an attempt to find alternatives to the neuroscientific naturalism, the authors refer to the traditions of Critical Theory and psychoanalysis, which enable a different understanding of human nature. This is followed by the debate between Honneth and Whitebook on the question of an anti- or pre-social self, and in reference to Adorno and Lorenzer, the authors develop a concept of second nature that allows them to adhere to the dynamics of the material nature and sociality within the human subject.

The concept of natural history has received a great deal of attention in contemporary practical philosophy, especially as a result of Michael Thompson's concept of natural-historical judgments which aims to explain the normativity of the human life-form. With this concept, the norms effective in a life-form are understood as something natural and constitutive for that life-form. Although Thompson does not present a historical-philosophical model, he claims to be able to determine the normativity of the historically developing human life-form. By contrast, Theodor W. Adorno developed his own concept of natural history on the one hand as an interpretative conceptual model of historical reality, on the other hand, to indicate the normativity of the natural-historical course of human history itself. The normativity of natural history that Adorno focuses on is historically and socially determined, in contrast to the categorically conceived natural normativity that is at the heart of Thompson's approach. This article analyses the similarities and differences between the two approaches in such a way that it becomes clear to what extent ethical naturalism also provides possibilities for critique that can be made fruitful for a critical theory inspired by Adorno.

This article demonstrates the ways in which Adorno’s and Horkheimer’s reflections on the dialectic of the domination of nature shed new light on recent discussions about the concept of the Anthropocene. A central motif is the fear of nature, which, according to Adorno, prevailed at the beginning of its mastery by humans in prehistoric times. Harnessing external nature enabled the stabilisation of internal nature and social relations. This link between nature’s relative stability and social relations was characteristic of the Holocene. In the Anthropocene, capitalist domination destabilises nature, which in turn destabilises social life. The natural terror of nature returns in the face of the socially produced climate catastrophe, adding a new aspect to Adorno’s and Horkheimer’s diagnosis of the domination of nature. The article concludes by suggesting a changed relationship to nature, which no longer would understand it as a mere object, but as a “subject in its own right”.

In this article, Herbert Marcuse’s nature-ethical considerations, which have to date been scarcely received, are used to develop perspectives on how the nature-ethical gap in contemporary Critical Theory could be closed. The central idea is that nature is tobe recognized as a subject in its own right without needing to anthropomorphize it in the process. The advocatory ethics of nature, which is outlined here, differs from current sustainability and environmental ethics primarily in that it maintains the tension between an anthropocentric and an ecocentric approach and does not resolve it in one direction. Marcuse’s so-called “liberation of nature” is understood as a means for the “liberation of humans”, but the latter can only succeed if the former is also carried out.

Obgleich der sogenannte neuzeitliche Dualismus von Natur und Geist regelmäßig für entweder dem Gegenstand des Menschen unangemessen oder gleich für gänzlich obsolet erklärt wird, reißt die Reihe der humanwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen nicht ab, die sich kritisch auf ihn beziehen. Der Grund dafür liegt darin, dass bis heute noch immer kein monistisches Erklärungsmodell zum Verständnis der menschlichen Natur entwickelt werden konnte, auf das man sich anders als nur in Abgrenzung zum neuzeitlichen Dualismus selbstverständlich beziehen könnte. Es liegt deswegen nahe, unterschiedliche Modelle, die eine Überwindung jenes Dualismus nicht nur fordern, sondern auch zu vollziehen beanspruchen, in ein Verhältnis zueinander zu setzen; in der Hoffnung, so der nicht mehr dualistischen Bestimmung der menschlichen Natur einen Schritt näher zu kommen. Tom Moderlaks als Examensarbeit entstandene Studie vergleicht zu diesem Zweck die theoretischen Ansätze Arnold Gehlens und Michael Tomasellos hinsichtlich der dort entwickelten begrifflichen Fassungen von Intersubjektivität, wobei ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die jeweiligen Sprachkonzepte gelegt wird.

In diesem Aufsatz wird die bislang kaum beachtete frühe Moralphilosophie von Max Horkheimer aus den 1930er Jahren in ein produktives Spannungsverhältnis zu den Grundannahmen des ethischen Naturalismus gesetzt. Horkheimer versteht die Moral als ein normatives Instrument, mit dem die menschliche Gattung ihr gesellschaftliches Leben zu organisieren versucht. Die natürliche Normativität der menschlichen Lebensform ist für Horkheimer selbst historisch bestimmt, als die menschliche Lebensform sich notwendig nur historisch realisieren kann. In der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft ist diese Normativität nach Horkheimer widersprüchlich verfasst: Einerseits sollen die Menschen moralischen Normen und nicht allein ihren eigenen Interessen folgen, andererseits erfordert die bürgerliche Gesellschaft gerade das rücksichtslose Verfolgen eigener Interessen, da sonst die Selbsterhaltung der Menschen gefährdet würde. Die Auswirkungen dieser Widersprüchlichkeit werden hier anhand von drei Aspekten untersucht: die Opazität und Naturhaftigkeit der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft, das Leiden der menschlichen Natur, Geschichte als Anpassungsprozess der menschlichen Natur. Abschließend wird Horkheimers Ansatz hinsichtlich seiner theoretischen Reichweite in den moralphilosophischen Diskussionen der gegenwärtigen Kritischen Theorie verortet.
