My research goal for the coming years is to explore whether a non-punitive alternative to criminal punishment can be both feasible and ethically justified. On the practical side, I interpret criminological findings in light of evolutionary social sciences and explore how emotions, such as anger, hatred, guilt, and compassion, function as evolved mechanisms, culturally scaffolded to serve normative roles in institutions. On the normative side, I ask whether a non-punitive system can better protect the rights of all parties involved, that is, victims, offenders, and society, than punitive systems.
