Read moreWhenever the question of studying the role of human consciousness in a psychophysical phenomenon arises, it is generally investigated in the realm of quantum physics, particularly in the context of quantum measurement. But that is not necessarily the case. We demonstrate here that even some classical systems, like the Chevreul hand-held pendulum, can offer a testing ground for such studies. Efforts are made here to analyse the role of consciousness, if any, in the oscillations of this magical pendulum. For this purpose, we investigate a complex oscillator in the extended complex phase plane. While the reals in the description correspond to the real-time observables in the outer world, the imaginaries, on the other hand, are considered as attributes of conscious intents taking place in the mental domain during the oscillations. In fact, the description of the complex oscillator turns out to be equivalent to a pair of coupled oscillators in which the dynamical coupling is automatically generated as a result of consciousness. A plausible laser beam experiment to this effect is suggested here to measure the difference between the time periods of these twin oscillators which perhaps can be a manifestation of the about 40 Hz synchronous frequency of electromagnetic signal observed in neuroscience experiments.
