This book provides a thorough and up-to-date introduction to the philosophy of quantum physics. Although quantum theory is renowned for its spectacular empirical successes, controversial discussion about how it should be understood continue to rage today. In this volume, the authors provide an overview of its numerous philosophical challenges: Do quantum objects violate the principle of causality? Are particles of the same type indistinguishable and therefore not individual entities? Do quantum objects retain their identity over time? How does a compound quantum system relate to its parts? These questions are answered here within different interpretational approaches to quantum theory. Finally, moving to Quantum Field Theory, we find that the problem of non-locality is exacerbated. Philosophy of quantum physics is aimed at philosophers with an interest in physics, while also serving to familiarize physicists with many of the essential philosophical questions of their subject.

In recent decades, the metaphysics of science has established itself as a distinct and dynamic field. This development has not only revitalized metaphysics as a serious area of inquiry but has also built a crucial bridge between scientific practice and enduring metaphysical questions. By anchoring metaphysical investigation in our best scientific theories, the field seeks to uncover and explore the fundamental nature of reality. This approach moves beyond a priori speculation, engaging directly with the empirical concepts and theoretical structures that shape our understanding of the physical world.

In this paper, I take two recent arguments in the literature against naturalistic metaphysics, that is, a metaphysics guided by our best science, and show that these arguments should be directed instead against metaphysical realism, which is roughly the view that our metaphysics aims to provide a unique and true account of the world out there. The first argument is the argument from progress which states that since metaphysical theories are not quantitative like scientific theories, they cannot inherit the progress from the scientific theories they are based upon. The second argument is the argument from metaphysical underdetermination which states that each scientific theory can be compatible with many metaphysical theories with no way to choose the true theory among them. These two arguments undermine metaphysical realism. As a result, I conclude that we ought to adopt instead a form of antirealistic metaphysics.

Some philosophers of physics have addressed criticisms of the so-called Received View (RV) of non-individual quantum objects, also called the orthodox view. Dennis Dieks made a very good resume of these criticisms in Dieks (in: Non-reflexive logics, non-individuals, and the philosophy of quantum mechanics: essays in honor of the philosophy of Décio Krause, Synthese Library, Springer, 2023) and Bigaj (Identity and indiscernibility in quantum mechanics. New directions in the philosophy of science, Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) has a more detailed account. In considering (mainly) these works and with some additional mentions, I hope to dissipate some misunderstandings about the RV and clarify what is happening with such a view. According to Dieks, the RV doesn’t fit the practice of physics since, in some situations, the physicist assumes that quantum objects can be treated individually, imitating standard objects (individuals) of classical physics. Dieks also proposes an Alternative View (AV), generally called the heterodox view, which would give a view of the fundamental ontology of quantum physics and which would be more by the way physicists usually proceed. I think that the AV cannot be viewed as the fundamental ontological theory despite being suitable for practical purposes. Furthermore, I think that it does not conflate the RV but is complementary to it, substituting it when quantum objects are sufficiently apart and can be treated in conformity with the classical way. From my point of view, in the practice of physics, one can adopt AV. Still, the RV is more adequate when we are looking for logical and foundational analyses, at least when the supposed metaphysics comprises non-individuals.

The Principle of Identity of Indiscernibles (PII) is the focus of much controversy in the history of Metaphysics and in contemporary Physics. Many questions rover the debate about its truth or falsehood, for example, to which objects the principle applies? Which properties can be counted as discerning properties? Is the principle necessary? In other words, which version of the principle is the correct and is this version true? This thesis aims to answer this questions in order to show that PII is a necessarily true principle of metaphysics. To accomplish this task, the reader will find, in this thesis, an encyclopaedical introduction to the history of PII and to the reasons it matters so much, followed by a presentation of the most famous arguments against it and the defences used against these arguments. Then, the reader finds in-depth discussion of the minutiae involved in postulating the principle as to make clear what is in fact being attacked and defended. With these preliminaries solved, a deeper analysis of these defences is presented aiming to discover which is the most appropriate example to use against the attacks to the principle. This analysis allowed a classification of these defences in four families with different strategies within them. Finally, with these defensive strategies at hand we are able to confront alleged counterexamples to PII in Mathematics with the intention to test these defences.

This edited collection provides new perspectives on some metaphysical questions arising in quantum mechanics. These questions have been long-standing and are of continued interest to researchers and graduate students working in physics, philosophy of physics and metaphysics. It features contributions from a diverse set of researchers, ranging from senior scholars to junior academics, working in varied fields, from physics to philosophy of physics and metaphysics. The contributors reflect on issues about fundamentality (is quantum theory fundamental? If so, what is its fundamental ontology?), ontological dependence (how do ordinary objects exist even if they are not fundamental?), realism (what kind of realism is compatible with quantum theory?), indeterminacy (can the world itself exhibit ontological indeterminacy?). With contributions from both physicists (including Nobel Prize winner Gerard 't Hooft), science communicators and philosophers.
