Raquel Cascales is a professor of Anthropology and Ethics in the Design program and Theory of the Arts in the Philosophy program at the University of Navarra. She has served as a Visiting Scholar at Columbia University (2022), The Warburg Institute in London (2018), and the University of Turin (2015).
Her research focuses on debates surrounding the nature of art, the analysis of new expressions in contemporary art, and the intersections between art and other disciplines. As a specialist in Arthur Danto, she has authored several books and articles, including "El fin del arte. Hegel y Danto cara a cara" (University of Valencia, 2020), "Arthur Danto and the End of Art" (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2019), and articles such as "Interpreting AI-Generated Art: Arthur C. Danto's Perspective on Intention, Authorship, and Creative Traditions in the Age of Artificial Intelligence" (The Polish Journal of Aesthetics, 2023) and "Vindicating the Historical Condition of Art and its Consequences: Hegel’s Influence on Danto’s Philosophical System" (Rivista di Estetica 2022).
In exploring new artistic expressions, she has delved into topics like graffiti ("Transfiguraciones estético políticas. Una reflexión sobre Street Art y la obra de Banksy," University of Valencia, 2020) and the challenges posed by science fiction and artificial intelligence in the present day ("Interiorize Ethics through Science Fiction. Brave New World as a Paradigmatic Case Study," Routledge, 2022; "Redefiniendo la identidad. Los postulados posthumanistas en Westworld," Scientia et Fides, 2019). She has also contributed to various projects and research groups on action art, resulting in publications like "Arte y transformación social. Encuentros y vanguardias" (Dykinson, 2023) and "Arte, acción, experiencia" (Sindéresis, 2019), co-edited with Ricardo Piñero.
Regarding interdisciplinary boundaries, Cascales has explored the theme of sacredness through her involvement in the group "Religión y sociedad civil" (2013-present), where she leads the project "El arte, la sociedad y sagrado" (since 2021). Publications in this realm include "Esculpir el vacío, adentrarse en lo sagrado" (Akal, 2024), and she presented the paper "Simone Weil, filósofa, activista política y mística" at the Jornada Dona i Filosofia (Universitat de les Illes Balears, 2023).
Recently, her interest in pushing the boundaries of traditional Aesthetics has led her to research Everyday Aesthetics and the Aesthetics of Care. She presented the paper "Designing Spaces to Transform Workspaces. How the Influence of the Aesthetic in the Space Can Help the Flourishing of Every Person" (Designing Everyday Experiences, Budapest, 2023) and directed the IX Encuentro Ibérico "Arte y vida" (University of Navarra, 2023).
