27Vagueness and common ground: the problem of sharp contoursPhilosophical Studies 183 (6): 1679-1695. 2026.This paper offers a criticism of Barker and MacFarlane’s approach to vagueness and communication. In their view, it is not problematic, as far as vagueness is concerned, to specify the content of a vague sentence: it is simply a function that updates the common ground. What is tricky, as far as vagueness is concerned, is to specify the common ground. In this paper, I will argue that their view is committed to attributing unreasonable propositional attitudes to at least one participant of any con…Read more

11Indexicality and ProminenceAnálisis Filosófico 46 (1): 187-211. 2026.Ezcurdia, in Complejidad y ambigüedad, proposes and defends functional referentialism. This is a novel proposal about what makes a linguistic expression referential. In her book, Ezcurdia also argues that proper names are not indexical, despite being context-dependent. In this article I explore this idea. Doing so is a fruitful exercise, as it shows interesting connections in the philosophy of Ezcurdia. The conclusion of the article is that, given Ezcurdia’s theoretical commitments, there is no …Read more

8The Quietist’s GambitCritica 50 (149): 3-30. 2018.In this paper I develop a semantic theory of vagueness that is immune to worries regarding the use of precise mathematical tools. I call this view semantic quietism. This view has the advantage of being clearly compatible with the phenomenon of vagueness. The cost is that it cannot capture every robust semantic fact.

37Leibniz on the existence of atomsManuscrito 40 (2): 19-38. 2017.ABSTRACT In this paper I present and evaluate Leibniz’s two main arguments against the existence of atoms. In this context atoms are extended particles that are absolutely hard, homogeneous, indivisible, and indestructible by natural means. As we shall see, Leibniz’s arguments are flawed in a very instructive way. The first argument is in tension with the claim that God created the best possible world. The second argument overgeneralizes in an undesirable way. However, as I shall discuss in the …Read more

54Instrumentos, Artefactos y ContextoAnálisis Filosófico 38 (1): 83-102. 2018.It is notoriously difficult to model the range of application of vague predicates relative to a suitable sorites series. In this paper I offer some critical remarks against an interesting view that has received little attention in the literature. According to it, the sharp cut-offs we find in our semantic models are just artifacts of the theory, and, as such, they are harmless. At the end I discuss a contextualist view that, at a cost, may be able to get around the problems related to sharp cut-…Read more

131Metalinguistic effectsMind and Language 38 (2): 545-565. 2023.We can communicate linguistic information by asserting sentences that are not explicitly about linguistic matters. Stalnaker offers a pragmatic account of this phenomenon. It is not clear that such an account is correct. In this article I offer an alternative account that does not rely on pragmatic mechanisms and which captures many of the insights in Stalnaker's theory of linguistic communication. The view is inspired by Barker's semantics of vague adjectives.

69The Bridge Principle and Stigmatized Truth-ValuesTopoi 40 (1): 171-180. 2019.The Bridge Principle states that one shouldn’t assert a sentence that is indeterminate relative to possibilities that are still live options. This principle serves as a bridge between semantic and pragmatic presuppositions. I argue that, given the phenomenon of vagueness, the bridge principle cannot be true as formulated. An alternative formulation of the Bridge Principle is offered.

68A Bump in the roadManuscrito 43 (4): 177-188. 2020.Roads to Reference offers a highly valuable contribution to the theory of reference. The arguments in this book are quite convincing and the overall picture presented in it is quite attractive. In what follows I would like to present some critical comments regarding the first chapter of the book, Demonstratives and Conflicting Intentions.
