The subject of his thesis was Ethics and Hermeneutics. It investigates the ethics of the german philosopher Wilhelm Dilthey. His Master Degree in Philosophy was concluded at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul on Ethics and Political Violence (1988). This study wanted to show that it is not possible to justify morally political violence to change a society.
Now he develops a research on the importance of emotions in the moral dilemmas and moral responsibility. Ricardo B, Di Napoli has published articles on Ethics and on the political and moral contractarianism of John Rawls and David Gauthier. Has published two books. The last one on Dilthey's Philosophy (Psychology, Hermeneutic and Ethics). The former one was about "Ethics and the understanding of the other" on the moral thoughts of W. Dilthey's view and the problem of considering the others in a world of moral ethnical conflicts, published by EDPUCRS, 2000. With other colleagues he has edited also two other books: 1) "Ethics and Justice" (Ética e Justiça, (Palotti/CNPq, 2003), on J. Rawls's conception of Justice and 2) "Norberto Bobbio: Right, Ethics e Polítics" (2005) about the thought of the italian philosopher Norberto Bobbio . Ricardo has written newspaper's articles about social, political and philosophical issues in the Brasilian journals of philosophy, e.g.: Dissertatio, Síntese, ethic@, Veritas, Principios, Ciências Humanas (UFSM). .
During the time at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil, he has coordinated the Workgroup of Ethics of the Brazilian Nacional Association of Pos-Graduation on Philosophy (ANPOF) (2012-16). He has directed the Research Group on Ethics and Applied Ethics from the Brazilian Council of Research (Santa Maria/CNPq), was a member of the research groups of the CNPq Justice and Political Culture, and still is a member of the group Knowledge, Language and Morality (CNPq) and of Ethics (Anpof).
Had been a member of the Bioethics Committee of the University Hospital of Santa Maria (2008-2011) and had coordinated the Committee on Research Ethics of the Federal University of Santa Maria (2003-2007). Has been actively participating in the activities of the Group of Ethics and Philosophy of Mind of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), coordinated by Prof. Dr. Wilson Mendonça.
Prof. Di Napoli received grants for research from the Brazilian Agency CNPq for the project of research on " Moral Dilemmas" (2008-2010) and has received scholarships from two important Brazilian Agencies (CAPES and the CNPq) and from The German agency Deutsche Akademishe Austauschdienst (DAAD).
