Growing discontent with the dominant concepts in environmental and animal ethics—traditionally shaped by the universalist and impersonal logic of deontological and consequentialist frameworks—has fueled an increasing interest in relationality and relational values. For over a decade, thinkers such as Mark Coeckelbergh and David J. Gunkel have advocated a ‘relational turn’ in these fields. Naturalistic virtue ethics, particularly as developed by Rosalind Hursthouse, was an early voice in emphasizing the moral significance of particular relations, such as species membership. However, the orthodox (eudaimonistic) interpretation of this approach has lost momentum and has largely been displaced by a pluralistic ‘environmental virtue ethics’ within environmental and animal ethics that affirms agent-independent values that should be promoted even when this is not conducive to the flourishing of the moral agent. This article draws on insights from the philosophy of science concerning typical dynamics of paradigm shifts. In particular, the scientific revolutions in astronomy and physics are used as a heuristic device to reframe naturalistic virtue ethics as an independent paradigm that can be viewed as part of a broader relational turn but is distinct from environmental virtue ethics. Specifically, the article draws an analogy to Einstein’s theory of relativity, proposing that ethical concepts should be treated not as absolutes—rooted in a neutral, universal rationality concerned with independent properties—but as objectively relative to the life-form of a species, much as Einstein demonstrated that time is relative to inertial frames of reference.

The prospect of designing whole brain emulations (WBEs) capable of replicating the phenomenological effects of human brains presents a compelling argument for granting robots that implement such technology a human-like moral status. While deontological and utilitarian perspectives struggle to refute this notion—potentially paving the way for recognizing a utility monster—the article proposes that naturalistic virtue ethics offers a more skeptical stance. Drawing on the metaethical and ontological tenets of neo-Aristotelian naturalism, as articulated by Philippa Foot and Michael Thompson, this article challenges the view that WBEs are ontologically and morally largely equivalent to humans. Instead, it argues that WBEs should be regarded as artifacts designed to serve human purposes. The discussion begins by examining analogous cases, such as the status of swamp beings as discussed by Thompson. The analysis is further informed by insights from Thomas Aquinas and contemporary virtue-ethical approaches to the ethics of technology. Ultimately, while the autonomous moral status of WBEs is refuted, the article emphasizes that they occupy a unique position among inanimate representational objects. Since the mental properties of WBEs signify human thoughts and inner experiences, their treatment and use require higher sensitivity and caution from virtuous agents than the treatment of other representational objects, such as virtual characters in video games, that primarily signify the outer appearance and behavior of human beings.

This article proposes a metaethical route from neo-Aristotelian naturalism, as developed in particular by Philippa Foot, to virtue-ethical longtermism. It argues that the metaethical assumptions of neo-Aristotelian naturalism inherently imply that a valid description of the life-form of a species must satisfy a formal requirement of internal sustainability. The elements of a valid life-form description then serve as a normative standard. Given that humans have the ability to influence the fate of future generations and know about their influence, this article posits that our future as a species becomes a part of the description of the human life-form. Consequently, in our case, the sustainability requirement is extended into the future, leading to a minimal and humanist version of longtermism. As in Rosalind Hursthouse’s naturalistic virtue ethics, the focus of the proposed virtue-ethical longtermism remains on developing virtues as the only reliable way for the agent to achieve the good life. However, since what can count as virtue must be compatible with a life-form description that, taken as a whole, facilitates the long-term survival of our species, this position still implies a genuine longtermism, although it contrasts with the quantifying and maximizing logic of consequentialism.

Eine neutrale Einführung in die Tugendethik – den ältesten ethischen Ansatz in der Philosophiegeschichte, der auf Aristoteles und Platon zurückgeht, aber seit der Aufklärung an Bedeutung verlor. Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts erlebte die Tugendethik eine Renaissance und gilt heutzutage, neben dem Konsequentialismus und der Deontologie, als eines der drei großen Paradigmen der normativen Ethik. Die Rolle der Tugend im Sinne der Vortrefflichkeit des Charakters und des Verstandes lässt sich dabei von verschiedenen (meta-)ethischen Positionen aus begründen. Die vorliegende Einführung führt im Rahmen einer neuen Systematik in die Vielzahl der tugendethischen Ansätze ein – verständlich, übersichtlich und mit einem Fokus auf moderne Ansätze.

This article explores the ambivalent relationship of neo-Aristotelian naturalism to ethical supervenience. One of the main proponents of this approach, Michael Thompson, holds a position that leads to a rejection of local ethical supervenience. It is argued that this rejection implicitly undermines a premise held by other prominent neo-Aristotelian naturalists, such as Philippa Foot or Rosalind Hursthouse, who implemented Thompson’s species-relative logic of ethical evaluations into their theories. This premise—that there is a systematic connection between the virtuous life and the benefit of the individual—could be re-established if neo-Aristotelian naturalism abandoned the species-essentialist understanding of life-forms and instead accepted local ethical supervenience as an ethical frame of reference. Although this article derives its problem from the main works of the aforementioned authors, its interest lies not mainly in exegesis, but in the systematic discussion of the logical status and the functionality of the concept of life-form in neo-Aristotelian naturalism. This discussion will be enriched by the inclusion of the logical distinctions and insights from modern philosophical biology.

Der Artikel zeigt, dass die naturalistische Tugendethik der Nachhaltigkeit einen besonderen, fundamentalen normativen Status zugestehen kann, sodass die Einbindung in eine nachhaltige Lebensform als eine Art Funktionsbedingung tugendhaften Konsumierens überhaupt gelten kann. Daraus ergibt sich im Rahmen der Konsumethik eine Basis für ein vertieftes Verständnis der Beziehung von biologischer und gesellschaftlicher Ebene der Lebensform, die beide auf unterschiedliche, miteinander konfligierende Formen von Funktionalität drängen können. The article demonstrates that naturalistic virtue ethics can grant sustainability a special, fundamental normative status. This implies that the integration into a sustainable life form has to be seen as a kind of foundational requirement for virtuous consumption in general. Within the framework of consumer ethics, this provides a basis for a more profound understanding of the relationship between the biological and social dimensions of life forms, both of which can tend toward different, and at times conflicting, forms of functionality.

Der neo-aristotelischen Tugendethik zufolge hängen ethische Maßstäbe von der biologischen Spezieszugehörigkeit der ethischen Akteure ab. Diese Perspektive, so argumentiert Richard Friedrich Runge in seinem Buch, bleibt bislang unbefriedigend. Unter Einbeziehung der modernen philosophischen Biologie und der dialektischen Anthropologie von Erich Fromm plädiert der Autor für eine kritische Wendung der Tugendethik und ein dialektisches Verständnis der Beziehung von Individuum und Umwelt. Seine kritische Theorie der Tugendethik ist der Versuch eines großen systematischen Neuentwurfs in einer der bestimmenden metaethischen Debatten unserer Zeit.

Die eudaimonistische Tugendethik sieht sich, was ihre innere Struktur anbelangt, standardmäßig mit den Vorwürfen des Egoismus und Anthropozentrismus konfrontiert, was auch das Projekt einer ökologischen Tugendethik zu gefährden scheint. Der vorliegende Artikel versucht, ausgehend von der Tugendethik Erich Fromms, eine neue Perspektive auf diese Standardvorwürfe zu entwickeln, indem er den theoretischen Implikationen nachgeht, die die Anerkennung der Biophilie – der Liebe zum Leben – als eine der Tugenden des Menschen für den Frommschen Ansatz hat. Die zunächst noch exegetisch ausgerichtete Diskussion der werkinternen Relation von humanistischer und biophiler Ethik bei Erich Fromm leitet schließlich zu einer stärker systematisch ausgerichteten Diskussion der inneren Dynamik von selbst- und umweltbezogenen Tugenden im tugendhaften Akteur über. In diesem Zuge wird deutlich gemacht, dass das selbstbezogene Streben nach eigener Eudaimonie und das umweltbezogene Streben nach der Förderung des Objekts der eigenen Liebe zwar durchaus miteinander in einen Konflikt geraten können, dass dieser Konflikt aber nicht zur Selbstauslöschung der Tugendethik führt, sondern stattdessen im tugendhaften Akteur eine produktive Dynamik entfaltet. Die klassische Gegenüberstellung von Anthropozentrismus und Biozentrismus innerhalb der Ethik lässt sich auf diese Weise unterlaufen.
