On graduating (1970) Kazan Gymnasium joined the physics department of KSU (Kazan State University). His major university disciplines were Riemannian geometry and general relativity. Nugayev’s magisterial work was devoted to nonmetric theories of gravity. On graduating from the post-graduate philosophy courses in Kazan and Moscow he gets his M.Sci degree at Moscow State University. The theme of his “kandidatskaya” dissertation was “Occurrence and Resolution of Theory-Choice Situations in Physics” (1979, philosophical faculty, Moscow University). The theme of his “doktorskaya” dissertation was “Reconstruction of Mature Theory Change”(1991, Moscow Institute of Philosophy, dept. of Philosophy of Science). In 1982 he had joined the KSU teaching staff to lecture on philosophy (and philosophy of science) and in 1993 was elected a KSU professor. In 2001 he had worked as an RSEP research fellow at the Department of History and Philosophy of Science in Bloomington, Indiana, USA under the supervision of Prof. Noretta Koertge. From 1997 to 2003 he was the head of the sociology&philosophy dept. at Tatarstan Academy of Science.
