ABSTRACT This paper is on the justification of, the epistemic principle defended by M. Huemer in his Phenomenal Conservatism theory. Put in a straightforward way, we can ask: what reasons are there for thinking that is true, that is, for thinking that appearances justify beliefs? This question corresponds - to use L. BonJour’s vocabulary - to the demand for a “metajustification”. The pursuit of this metajustification can take different directions, depending on the general conception or nature of epistemic justification we are working with and on who is supposed to satisfy the demand. Unfortunately, all of these directions seem to lead to a dead end. In other words, the apparently fair and even essential demand for a metajustification of cannot be met by the theory, at least in a satisfactory way. If we are right about that, it will remain the difficult question whether Phenomenal Conservatism is the only one to be blamed for this failure. We will briefly talk about that in the conclusion.

Este artigo parte do pressuposto não-cético de que há conhecimento moral A questão que se coloca então é de que modo talconhecimento é possível, ou, mais exatamente, como as crenças morais sãojustificadas. A hipótese do artigo é que o intuicionismo moral fornece umaboa resposta para tal questão, desde que se entenda o intuicionismo comouma epistemologia moral comprometida com os seguintes pontos – aexistência de crenças morais básicas, fundacionais, não implica que não hajanecessidade de reflexão prévia; por outro lado, não há a necessidade depostular um órgão ou faculdade especial de intuição moral; as crenças moraisbásicas podem ocorrer em três níveis distintos de generalização; e crençasmorais básicas não precisam ser infalíveis.This paper has a non-skeptical presupposition that there is moral knowledge. The question then is how this knowledge ispossible, or more exactly, how the moral beliefs are justified. Our hypothesisis that moral intuitionism provides a good answer for that question, inasmuchas we understand intuitionism as a moral epistemology commited to thefollowing points – the existence of foundational moral beliefs does not implythat there is no need of previous reflection; on the other hand there is nonecessity of postulating a special organ or faculty for moral intuitions;foundational moral beliefs can occur in three different levels of generalization;and foundational moral beliefs do not need to be infallible.

This paper raises some questions and objections to Alvin Plantinga ’s epistemology of religion. In Part I, we have a non-believer speaking. She is in fact an epistemologist and is not very comfortable with Plantinga ’s reformed epistemology. In Part II, we have a Christian believer, and the questions will therefore be from the perspective of someone who is inside, who sincerely believes the main teachings of Christian religion. We do not mean by those questions, however, that Plantinga ’s approach is wrong. It only needs some clarifications
