On the verisimilitude of artificial intelligence
    Logique Et Analyse- 190 (189): 323-350. 2005.
This paper investigates how the simulation of intelligence, an activity that has been considered the notional task of Artificial Intelligence, does not comprise its duplication. Briefly touching on the distinction between conceivability and possibility, and commenting on Ryan’s approach to fiction in terms of the interplay between possible worlds and her principle of minimal departure, we specify verisimilitude in Artificial Intelligence as the accurate resemblance of intelligence by its simulat…Read more

The paper investigates the system of 'Imaginary Logic' created by the Russian logician N.A. Vasil'ev (1880-1940), considered by some to be a forerunner of paraconsistent or intuitionistic logics. It is shown how he constructs a logic without the law of contradiction redefining the concept of negation. Vasil'ev singles out two levels of logic, an external one which is absolute and one depending on commitments in relation to cognizable objects which is not absolute. His reconstruction of the syllo…Read more

Esta propuesta sug…Read more

    Realisme en antirealisme
    Tijdschrift Voor Filosofie 53 (4). 1991.
In this article the contemporary debate between realism and anti-realism in analytical philosophy is analysed and discussed. It is claimed that the nature of the reference relation which holds between language and the world is central in this discussion which has both logical, semantical, and epistemological aspects. In a first part A. Tarski's (semantic) theory of thru th is explained and it is shown how, amongst several theories of truth, Tarski's may be called a realist one. However, a Tarski…Read more

Within recent discussions in the Philosophy of Mind, the nature of conscious phenomenal states or qualia (also called ‘raw feels’ or the feel of ‘what it is like to be’) has been an important focus of interest. Proponents of Mind-Body Type-Identity theories have claimed that mental states can be reduced to neurophysiological states of the brain. Others have denied that such a reduction is possible; for them, there remains an explanatory gap. In this paper, functionalist, physicalist, epiphenomen…Read more

In the discussion between realism and anti-realism, the causal theory of reference plays a central role. As a version of metaphysical realism, causal realism maintains that language is hooked upon the world by means of causal chains that account for the relation between language and extra-linguistic reality, a thesis denied by antirealism in its various forms. The paper investigates these criticisms which are both logical and epistemological, taking as an example H. Putnam's views on these matte…Read more

Every agent (animal or human) perceives and reacts to its own environment according to its own psychophysical structure and organization. This is true for machine intelligence as well as for any other agent. Machine intelligence must perceive and react to its environment according to its own cognitive organization, which requires a linguistic model. We claim that we need a logico-linguistic ontology for the construction of the agentive character of machine intelligence. © 2012 Elsevier B.V., All…Read more

Roger Vergauwen seeks to provide an answer to the question, "How does language connect to the world?" He begins with the recent developments in formal semantics and from them constructs his own 'theory of reference' with which he considers the nature of the correspondence of the world. The author locates his metalogics between the philosophy of language and epistemology while he covers a range of models from Plato to Wittgenstein. Vergauwen assumes no previous technical or logical study. Content…Read more

Computers are formal systems; and the mind is a very complex structure originating in and associated with the brain. This is true especially with regard to cognition and intelligence. In that sense, the basic question of artificial intelligence, "Can a machine think?", refers to the question "is it possible to design formal systems that can imitate the very complex structure of the human mind?" In order to give an affirmative answer to this question, some theoretical model on mind, logic and lin…Read more
