My research focuses upon moral sentimentalism in the Scottish Enlightenment period with a specific emphasis upon the thought of David Hume and Adam Smith. I am interested in a range of issues involving the thinkers of this period including: the possibility of moral progress within a sentimentalist framework, the nature of moral judgment, the scope of sympathy and moral consideration, and the duties of justice.
