Sam Machado is a visual ethnographer. His present research is a collaboration with the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida. Sam studies landscape ontologies, Indigenous Data governance and data arts. His past work explores nonhuman personhood, and identity. He is best known for his Eisner nominated graphic novel “Thing: Inside the Struggle for Animal Personhood” from Island Press. Sam’s editorial cartooning has received international recognition on the topics of immigration, gender norms, and popular culture. His 2015-2017 Featured Webtoon “Cyberbunk,” explores issues of self-authorship, surveillance, and bioengineering.
