At a time of crisis and war in Europe, the Vienna Circle member Otto Neurath and the British philosopher L. Susan Stebbing corresponded and co-operated for over a decade from the 1930s onwards. Despite programmatic differences, they agreed that the role of philosophy, science and scientific expertise needed to be reconsidered and that the formation of modern democracies and an egalitarian global society had to be actively promoted that way. The aim was to improve the lives of as many people as possible and contribute to their happiness. For this purpose, it was necessary to find new techniques of knowledge transfer for the general public, but also to train people in critical thinking and in the judgement of facts and data—as an independent, questioning attitude dealing with institutions, politics, or the media. The requirements for transfer on the knowledge production side had to be reflected accordingly. The modernity of Neurath and Stebbing’s respective thoughts lies in their focus on the ordinary use and transfer of knowledge, in questioning the unlimited authority of scientific experts as well as the ideal of science at the time—in favour of a more pluralistic approach to fight propaganda and disinformation and support social change.

In recent years, there has been an almost exponentially growing tendency to study and evaluate the life and work of L. Susan Stebbing. She was the first female professor of philosophy in Britain, and thus could serve as a role model for many inquiries of feminist studies within the history of analytic philosophy (for example in Janssen-Lauret 2024). Stebbing was not just a recognized and respected formal logician, but represented an early, socially and politically engaged form of analytic philosophy. Her papers, books, and pamphlets were formed in and shaped by current public events; she was sensitive to debates of the time and never hesitated to take an active role in helping others, be they scholarly refugees, young children, or the (un)educated masses that confronted on a daily basis the latest and fallacious mass-communication and propaganda machineries. Her practical logic (see, for example, Stebbing 1934) was meant to serve a debunking role within public policy and everyday life. Thus, Stebbing was a many-faceted philosopher, logician, and public intellectual, whose ideas are still relevant in debates about the place and future of philosophy in demented times.

Bei der Entwicklung zeitgemäßer Kommunikationsformen für den Wissenstransfer mit internationaler Reichweite, insbesondere im Medium des illustrierten Sachbuchs, spielten Verleger, Künstler, Autoren und Wissenschaftler im angloamerikanischen Exil eine zentrale Rolle. Die Genese der zugrunde liegenden Wissenskonzepte und der damit verbundenen komplexen Praktiken, Werkzeuge und Methoden war eng mit technischen und ästhetisch-gestalterischen Innovationen im Bereich der Printmedien verbunden. Letztere erhielten Impulse aus der zeitgenössischen Medienvielfalt – von Fotografie, Film und zeitgenössischer Kunst bis zum Design. Diese Entwicklung war nicht ohne jene theoretisch-methodische Grundlage und gestalterische Praxis denkbar, wie sie Otto Neurath als Mitglied des Wiener Kreises und Leiter des Österreichischen Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseums entwickelt hatte. In der Verbindung von abstrakter „wissenschaftlicher Weltauffassung“ und didaktischer Realisation sollte das Ideal einer friedlichen, internationalen Gesellschaftsordnung sinnlich fassbar und erfahrbar gemacht werden: „Unification by Visualisation“ und „Unification by Logicalisation“ wurden für Neurath zum zentralen Narrativ einer universellen humanistischen Bildung durch logisches Denken und die visuelle Transformation von Informationen für eine moderne egalitäre Gesellschaft.

Die Entstehung der vom Wiener Kreis getragenen philosophischen Bewegung des Logischen Empirismus, seine Ziele und die Positionen der Mitglieder sind weitgehend erforscht und dokumentiert worden. Es gibt allerdings immer noch wenig bearbeitete Themen; dazu gehören nicht zuletzt Otto Neuraths Aktivitäten im britischen Exil bis zu seinem frühen Tod. Neurath gelang es trotz Verfolgung und Flucht, seine wissenschaftlichen Aktivitäten im Rahmen der Unity-of-Science-Bewegung fortzusetzen und neue Allianzen zu schließen, nicht zuletzt mit der britischen Philosophin L. Susan Stebbing. Beide positionierten sich als Wissenschaftler und Intellektuelle gegen ein einseitiges, traditionelles, von sozialen, kulturellen oder religiösen Grenzen geprägtes Verständnis von Wissenschaft und Bildung. Gleichzeitig arbeitete Neurath weiterhin in Theorie und Praxis an seiner Bildpädagogik, im Sinne einer”„Humanisierung des Wissens” zur Förderung einer modernen demokratischen Weltgesellschaft.

In diesem Abschnitt wird die Kooperation zwischen dem Isotype-Institut und der Buchproduktionsfirma Adprint sowie den mit ihnen verbundenen Akteuren im Einzelnen dargelegt: Letztere führte zu einer Weiterentwicklung der Arbeit von Otto und Marie Neurath – wie auch bei der Buchproduktionsfirma Adprint und deren Nachfolgern Die dabei sukzessive erreichte Standardisierung und Professionalisierung kreativer Prozesse sollte nicht nur die gemeinsam produzierten Bücher prägen, sondern auch einen langfristigen Einfluss auf die Strategien der Visualisierung in bebilderten Publikationen zu Sachthemen für den „common reader” haben. Insgesamt lassen sich die kreative Kooperation und Einflussnahme zwischen Adprint und dem Isotype-Institut anhand folgender Merkmale beschreiben: konzeptionell durch den engen Austausch über die Bedeutung und Umsetzung der Visualisierung von Information; gestalterisch-ästhetisch durch die Einbindung von Isotypen in die Buchlayouts sowie die enge semantische Verknüpfung von Text und Bild; inhaltlich durch die visuelle Transformation in Abstimmung mit den jeweils zu vermittelnden Informationen sowie durch die Kommunikation zwischen beauftragten Autoren, Adprint-Redakteuren und Mitarbeitern des Isotype-Instituts und organisatorisch im Hinblick auf die enge Zusammenarbeit von Teams von Spezialisten bei der Konzeption und Realisation der Bücher und den beteiligten Verlagen. Die beschriebenen Prozesse und Zusammenhänge zeigen, dass viele der aus Österreich und Deutschland vertriebenen Intellektuellen, Wissenschaftler und Künstler auch im Exil noch eine nicht zu unterschätzende Rolle bei der Vermittlung von Informationen an eine breite Öffentlichkeit spielten.

Otto Neuraths zusammen mit seinem Team in Österreich begonnene bildpädagogische Arbeit und die „Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik“ bildeten die Grundlage für die Entwicklung der künstlichen „Hilfssprache” Isotype im Exil. Diese wird in ihren Grundzügen, zentralen Praktiken, organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen und damit verbundenen Kooperationen vorgestellt. Darauf aufbauend erweiterte Otto Neurath sein Konzept einer „visuellen Erziehung“ im Allgemeinen und in Bezug auf einen modernen Bild-Text-Stil. Dem lagen auch eine kontinuierliche Beschäftigung mit historischen Vorbildern und Traditionen des Wissenstransfers im Buch zugrunde sowie neue Möglichkeiten zur Realisation mithilfe der druck- und reproduktionstechnischen Innovationen jener Zeit. Nicht zuletzt durch die Zusammenarbeit mit ebenfalls emigrierten Buchproduzenten, Künstlern, Wissenschaftlern sowie britischen Verlagen und Autoren konnte sich das von Otto und Marie Neurath in Oxford gegründete Isotype-Institut dauerhaft etablieren. Ziel war es, ein internationales Publikum zu erreichen – im Dienst einer „Humanisierung” des Wissens.

Die erste Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts war eine Zeit massiver sozialer, wirtschaftlicher, technischer und wissenschaftlicher Entwicklungen. Mit dem Aufkommen bzw. der breiten Rezeption neuer Massenmedien wurden auch neue Konzepte und Standards des Informationstransfers entwickelt und erprobt. Dies galt insbesondere für die Vermittlung von sachlichem, sozial-, natur- und kulturwissenschaftlichem Wissen für den „common reader“, also den fachwissenschaftlichen Laien und mündigen Bürger. Mit den Überlegungen zur Dissemination von wissenschaftlichen Informationen waren auch Ideen zur Realisation dieses Vorgangs, etwa durch Kooperationen spezialisierter Akteure, sowie dem Medienwandel angepasste Wissenskonzepte bzw. deren Rückwirkung insbesondere auf visuelle Medien verbunden. Diese Zusammenhänge zwischen der im Sinne einer „Demokratisierung des Wissens“ vorangetriebenen Entwicklung einer neuartigen Symbolsprache namens Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education) und des darauf aufbauenden „picture-text style“ durch den österreichischen Sozialwissenschaftler und Philosophen Otto Neurath (1882–1945) werden hier untersucht – als Methode der „Humanisierung“ von wissenschaftlichen Informationen für ein Massenpublikum einerseits und Genese eines modernen illustrierten Sachbuchtyps im 20. Jahrhundert andererseits. Im Exil kooperierte Neurath dafür mit anderen Emigranten, jüdischen und linksliberalen Verlegern bzw. den sog. Book packagern, und ihren Mitarbeitern aus Wien und Berlin. Gemeinsam entwickelten sie modern gestaltete, semantisch dichte Bild-Text-Verbindungen insbesondere als Sachbuchreihen. Dafür wurden sukzessive kreative Praktiken und organisatorische Strukturen etabliert bzw. adaptiert, die nach 1945 erweitert und für den internationalen Buchmarkt nutzbar gemacht werden konnten. So erreichte man mit hochwertig visualisierten Sachthemen ein Massenpublikum und brachte zeitgemäße Formen der Wissensvermittlung hervor, welche deren Visualisierungsstrategien langfristig prägten.

The book deals with the significance of the philosophy of the Vienna Circle and Otto Neurath's concept of "visual education" for the emergence of a new image-text style, particularly in modern illustrated non-fiction. In this context, the contribution of German-speaking emigrants in Great Britain and the USA is acknowledged, many of whom are almost forgotten outside specialist circles today, such as Wolfgang Foges and Paul Steiner. In addition, the hitherto largely neglected relationship between the British philosopher L. Susan Stebbing and Neurath during his years in exile is discussed. The publication thus opens up interdisciplinary perspectives for Vienna Circle research, both in the field of the history of science and books, exile research and the history of analytical philosophy.

Two new publications deal with the visual communication of knowledge and the possibility of universally understandable symbolic languages as essential prerequisites for comprehending and participating in social and political transformations in the twentieth century. Both—and this should hardly come as a surprise in this context—present projects that are directly or indirectly, in theory and/or practice connected with the Vienna Circle member Otto Neurath. Thus, after a prolonged examination of Neurath’s Viennese period and the projects at the Österreichisches Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum, interest in Isotype and Otto Neurath’s intellectual development in exile has fortunately increased and led to a revised and enriched perspective on his work. Nevertheless, these two books shed light on contexts and aspects that have received rather limited attention to date. This is not just important for the classification of the development of the Isotype Institute in British exile, but also for the idea of a symbolic language through a former employee of Otto Neurath in Vienna, Rudolf Modley, and his collaborators such as cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead during the war and in the post-war period in the USA. In this respect, both publications might also allow an assessment of the reception and connection of ideas on visual communication in parts of the English-speaking world and their integration into the “visual memory” of the time—at least in a certain environment.

When Otto Neurath went into exile in 1934, first to Holland and then to England, he succeeded in establishing important new connections within the context of the international Unity of Science movement, for which he was largely responsible. A notable example was the British philosopher L. Susan Stebbing, who supported his pragmatic ideas on the “humanization” of knowledge. Both Neurath and Stebbing were looking for ways to apply modern logic and linguistic analysis, not only to the transfer of information in science and teaching, but above all in publication projects for the “common reader.” In 1941, Stebbing became the first president of the Isotype Institute in Oxford, which Neurath directed until 1945. Soon after ISOTYPE was founded, long-term relations began between it and the book-packaging company Adprint managed by German-speaking emigrés in London, as well as its successors and British clients. A technically and organizationally sophisticated process for the production of illustrated non-fiction books was gradually established. The “picture-text style” developed by Neurath and epitomized in Modern Man in the Making was applied to non-fiction books and series with “integrated layouts,” then professionalized and successively transformed into a production model for illustrated books which enabled scientific information to be prepared for the mass market and the “common reader” – in the service of a modern, democratic society.
