Alfred North Whitehead is arguably the most original 20th-century philosopher of nature and metaphysics. In recent decades a number of physicists have produced ground-breaking new theories in fundamental physics influenced by his process philosophy. In contrast, few biologists are even aware that Whitehead's radical rethinking of the Cartesian assumptions implicit in 19th-century sciences might be relevant to their enterprise. This book seeks to fill this gap by exploring how Whitehead's process ontology might provide a new philosophical foundation for the biosciences of the 21st century. The central premise shared by all of the volume's authors is the idea that all living processes are irreducible processes. Each chapter focuses on assumptions implicit in some of the core concepts of biology- such as organism, evolution, information, and teleology - that play crucial explanatory roles in the biosciences, but as metaphysical concepts fall outside its purview. The authors each identify important shortcomings implicit in contemporary biological paradigms and show how an approach grounded in a process-oriented metaphysics can avoid them.

Der Begriff der Erfahrung bildet eines der wichtigsten Fundamente der Prozessmetaphysik Whiteheads, da er alle ‚actual entities‘, d. h. die fundamentalsten Entitäten seiner Metaphysik, als Erfahrungsakte bzw. erlebende Subjekte versteht (PRd, 54 & 76 & 112 & 246/PR, 16 & 29 & 51 & 129; AId, 328/AI, 177; MTd, 180 f./MT, 151). Sie sind „komplexe und interdependente Erfahrungströpfchen [drops of experience]“ (PRd, 58/PR, 18). Alle ‚actual entities‘, von den biologisch komplexesten bis zu den primitivsten der anorganischen Natur, sind solche atomare Erfahrungsakte, die Resultate ihrer eigenen Zwecksetzungen sind (FRd, 29/FR, 31). Ihr „Ziel ist das Erleben selbst, das zu einem solchen Prozess gehört“ (MTd, 182/MT, 152). Sie sind sich selbst bildende Erlebensprozesse (AI 179/dt. 330), die um ihretwillen entstehen (SMWd, 199/SMW, 170).

Zentrale Fragen der Biologie bilden einen sehr wichtigen Ausgangspunkt der reifen prozessphilosophischen Phase Whiteheads, die mit Science and the Modern World beginnt. Whitehead hält die Problematik des Lebens für die zentrale Frage der Wissenschaft und Philosophie (MTd, 178/MT, 148). Die lebendige Natur kann uns den Schlüssel für das Verständnis der nicht biologischen Natur liefern (MTd, 180/MT, 150): Er fordert, „dass die Mängel unseres Konzepts der physischen Natur durch die Fusion mit dem Begriff des Lebens ausgeglichen werden sollen“ (MTd, 180/MT, 150). Er insistiert darauf, dass „die Grundprinzipien des Lebendigen auf rudimentäre Weise in allen Formen der physischen Existenz gegenwärtig sind“ (FRd, 21/FR, 21). Er wendet also oft den Begriff ‚Leben‘ auf Prozesse sowohl der biotischen Natur, die von den Biowissenschaften studiert werden, als auch der abiotischen, die vor allem Gegenstand der Physik ist, an. Bei jedem elementaren Prozess der abiotischen und der biotischen Natur, d. h. bei jeder noch so einfachen ‚actual entity‘, handelt es sich um einen „individuellen Akt unmittelbaren Selbsterlebens, ein Erfahrungsereignis“ (MTd, 180–181/MT, 151). ‚Actual entities‘ sind jedoch Erfahrungsakte, denen nur außerordentlich selten Bewusstsein zukommt (PRd, 69 & 115 & 121 & 264 & 509/PR, 25 & 53 & 56 & 139 & 280; FRd, 16 & 30/FR, 16 & 32). Das Bewusstsein ist lediglich der Höhepunkt des Mentalen (AId, 332/AI, 180; FRd, 30–31/FR, 33–34.). ‚Leben‘ bedeutet „reine Aktivität“ (MT, 178/147) und Wert, der um seiner selbst willen existiert (MTd, 167/MT, 135). Sogar das Verständnis der elementarsten Prozesse, d. h. der quantenphysikalischen Ereignisse der abiotischen Natur, erfordert „einen Begriff kreativer Aktivität“ (MTd, 181/MT, 151).

This chapter investigates two central biological concepts: teleological end-state directedness and agency. Its aim is to point out some key difficulties in how these concepts are understood in contemporary biology and philosophy of biology, and to show how a process-metaphysical approach to organisms can help us overcome these problems. To this purpose, we analyse the understanding of teleology and agency in contemporary biological systems theories. We focus in particular on the concept of mechanism, which plays an important role both in these theories and in modern biology and philosophy of biology. This examination shows that, first of all, mechanistic thinking ultimately reduces teleological explanations to merely a useful way of speaking that has no ontological relevance, and second, that the ability of organisms to autonomously and profoundly transform their material structure exceeds the explanatory power of mechanistic explanations. As an alternative, I propose a process-philosophical understanding of organismic end-state directedness and agency that is based on the central metaphysical and bio-philosophical concepts and ideas introduced by Alfred N. Whitehead and Henri Bergson.

Gegenstand dieser Untersuchung ist die Relevanz und Notwendigkeit eines prozesstheoretischen Verstandnisses des onto- und embryogenetischen Werdens von Organismen. Zuerst werden die Grenzen der modernen systemtheoretischen Reduktion des Organismus auf selbstorganisierte physikochemische Systeme aufgezeigt. Im zweiten Schritt werden, ausgehend von den Prozessontologien von A. N. Whitehead und H. Bergson, alternative Betrachtungen von Onto- und Embryogenese eingefuhrt. Abschliessend wird eine neue Prozessphilosophie skizziert, in welche Ontologien beider Denker integriert werden.

Open peer commentary on the article “Towards a PL-Metaphysics of Perception: In Search of the Metaphysical Roots of Constructivism” by Konrad Werner. Upshot: My commentary has three aims. Firstly, to provide additional support to Konrad Werner’s correct insight that radical constructivism is based on a radical distinction between experienced reality and ontological reality. This is a strong metaphysical statement. Secondly, that radical constructivism is implicitly rooted in Cartesian ontological dualism. Thirdly, that Whitehead’s process ontology provides a fruitful foundation for Werner’s thesis that perceptions are metaphysically significant

Cassirer’s philosophy of symbols is applied to Uexküll’s concept of “Umwelt” (meaningful environment). I argue that the vast domain of human symbolism extends the human Umwelt far beyond the Umwelts of animal species. We humans live and act in many intersecting symbolic worlds, one of the most important of which is our ethical Umwelt. I claim that against the background of ecological disaster and the uncontrolled accelerating incursion of our financial institutions and biotechnological industry into planetary ecology, the term “Umwelt” can no longer simply mean the part of our surroundings that is meaningful to us. Given the current severe ecological crisis, Cassirer’s idea of an “ethical Umwelt” must also be expanded, and an ethical imperative must be integrated into our understanding of “environment.” In other words, for us today the meaning of the term “Umwelt” or “meaningful environment” should be synonymous with “the living world to be saved” or “sacred environment.”
