This article examines how Richard Hooker’s views can serve as a critique of the postmodernist conception of truth. This concept was popularized by Pauline Marie Rosenau. She distinguishes between two types of postmodernism: Skeptical Postmodernism and Affirmative Postmodernism. In relation to the interpretation of truth, Skeptical Postmodernism rejects the very possibility of truth. In fact, for Skeptical Postmodernism, truth is a form of terrorism; it threatens, silences, and then extinguishes other ideas regarding the possibility of reinterpreting or rejecting that truth. Affirmative Postmodernism also rejects universal truth and discards the notion of a hidden truth “out there” waiting to be uncovered. However, in Affirmative Postmodernism, the idea and forms of truth—local, personal, and communal truths—are still considered possible. This study employs a critical analysis approach: using Richard Hooker’s lens to examine the validity of Roesnau’s conceptual framework.
