Stephen Ingram

I am a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Manchester. I am mainly interested in moral philosophy (especially metaethics) and philosophy of education (especially moral education). I am also interested in political philosophy, social epistemology, and philosophy of mind.

I have published a monograph defending 'robust' moral realism, in which I give a central role to the concept of normative non-arbitrariness and to the importance of interpersonal moral dialogue. For some reason several of my published articles have ended up being about moral error theory, but I have also published on relaxed realism, expressivism, intuitionist moral epistemology, and forgiveness.

I am about halfway through writing a monograph on the theory and subject matter of morality. This is a long-term project that I add to and tinker with when I have a bit of spare time. ​I have recently been linking my interests in metaethics and education. E.g. I have a forthcoming paper on moral education and the 'now what?' question for moral error theorists, and I am working on a paper that puts educational theorising into contact with intuitionist moral epistemology. I am also working on a number of more general topics in philosophy of education, e.g. concerning the nature of indoctrination, the teaching of controversial issues, the distribution of educational resources, and the significance of belonging in education.
