Suzanne Stern-Gillet

I studied Philosophy and Classics at the Universities of Liège (Belgium) and Manchester (UK). I hold a Licence en Philosophie et Lettres (Liège), an MPhil in Greek and Latin (Manchester) for a thesis on Aristotle’s Philosophy of Primary Friendship and a DPhil in Philosophy (‘with great distinction’) (Liège) for a thesis on Philosophie et Histoire: Essai sur la Philosophie de R.G. Collingwood. I have taught in universities in continental Europe and the United States, she is currently Professor Emerita of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Bolton and Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Manchester. Having early in my career translated Gilbert Ryle’s The Concept of Mind into French and published in the tradition of analytical philosophy, I now concentrate my research on ancient Greek philosophy of the Classical and post-Classical period. My particular interests lie in ancient concepts of selfhood and virtue and in the developments of theories of poetry and art.
