Timothy Stanley

I am an Associate Professor in the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Most of my work addresses the ethics and politics of deep difference. My research asks how democracies can deliberate well when citizens disagree not just about policy but about what matters most. Religious difference is my central case because it's the most demanding one. Models that work there apply well to other intercultural contexts. A second strand of my work asks what happens to public argument when its technology changes. I've written on the printing press after the Enlightenment, on deliberative forums under conditions of religious strife, and most recently on situated cognition — the idea that thinking runs through our tools, texts, and language rather than staying inside our heads. That last thread is my priority right now, given recent developments in AI.
