Argumentiert wird für die These, dass es keine immanenten, normativ geltenden Maßstäbe der angemessenen Realisierung sozialer Praktiken (Bräuche, Gepflogenheiten usw.) gibt, sofern mit ‚normativer Geltung‘ die Verbindlichkeit eines Sollens bezeichnet sein soll, die über den in einer Gemeinschaft hinreichend etablierten Geltungsglauben im Verbund mit hinreichend etablierter Sanktionsbereitschaft (bzw. großer Sanktionswahrscheinlichkeit) bei vermeinter Regelübertretung hinausgeht. Prägnanter: Soziale Praktiken sind keine eigenständige Rechtsquelle eines immanenten Sollens. Um dies zu zeigen wird dafür argumentiert, dass die vermeintliche Selbstverständlichkeit der Geltung praxisimmanenter Angemessenheitsmaßstäbe durch die menschliche Neigung zu alltagsontologischer Verdinglichung eigener Irritationsreaktionen erklärt werden kann. Sofern allerdings die von Teilnehmern einer Praxis verdinglichend als geltend angesetzten Maßstäbe faktisch stets mehr oder weniger stark divergieren – und sich zur Begründung genuin immanenter normativer Geltung ein Rekurs auf externe normative Maßstäbe oder die faktische Verbreitung eines Geltungsglaubens innerhalb einer Praxisgemeinschaft verbietet –, scheint als Konsequenz unumgänglich: Sozial angemessen ist, was bei den je Involvierten als angemessen passiert.

Der Beitrag konzentriert sich auf die Entwicklung dreier verschränkter Thesen: 1. Ein zentraler Baustein der Phänomenologie als Methode besteht in einem verbalen Zeigen auf Phänomene, die den Adressierten vorprädikativ oder präreflexiv bereits vertraut sind. Phänomenologie ist verbal vermitteltes Sehenlassen präreflexiver Phänomene. 2. Die uns in der Erfahrung gegebenen Phänomene (etwa Situationen, Ereignisse, Dinge) lassen sich selbst als ‚Hinweissysteme, Strahlensysteme von Hinweisen‘ (Husserl) explizieren. Phänomene zeigen innenhorizontal auf naheliegende Möglichkeiten von Erfahrungsverläufen, die jeweilige Art dieses Zeigens ist ihre Gegebenheitsweise. 3. Der erlebte Wirklichkeitscharakter von Phänomenen korreliert mit dem Grad ihrer einstimmigen Bewährung im zeitlichen Verlauf der Erfahrung. Daher können uns auch virtuelle Situationen und Entitäten in gewöhnlichem Sinn als wirklich gegeben sein.

Immersive experiences are typically associated with entering alternative worlds, often represented as distinct spatial environments. This paper challenges such conventional notions of immersion by arguing that the contexts of immersion aren’t spatially articulated “worlds” but temporally structured “situations” of limited scope. We propose a novel concept of immersion, asserting that being immersed in a situation involves being experientially and actively in sync with its unfolding temporal structure, rhythm, vibe, and pace. Drawing on the phenomenology of (film)experience and following the wave metaphor, we examine the underlying dynamics of time experience in immersive encounters. This expanded understanding of immersion has profound implications, bridging the gap between lm experience and everyday life and revealing the political dimensions of immersive experience.

Emotional robotics represents a trend. On the one hand, emotions seem to be essential to enhance the cognitive performance of artificial systems. On the other hand, emotions are supposed to make the interaction of robots with humans more intuitive and natural. In social contexts, recognizing and displaying emotions even seems to be indispensable. This volume addresses the theoretical foundations and possibilities of emotional robotics and explores its social consequences and ethical assessment. It combines two perspectives: (1) research on the nature of emotions and their implementation in artificial systems and (2) current work in emotional human-robot interaction (HRI) from a theoretical and ethical point of view. The first chapter gives an overview of the state of the art and provides the framework for situating the individual contributions of this volume.

The tacit understanding of situations is a fundamental aspect of human experience, behavior, and thinking. The paper argues that “situational stances” underly the tacit grasping of situations in human cognition. Contrary to, e.g., schema and script theories, situational stances are not conceived as conceptual knowledge structures used to interpret scenes or circumstances pregiven in perception. Rather, situational stances belong to the dispositional “Background” (Searle) that shapes and mediates immediate experience. Operative situational stances thus at least partly constitute situations as social-ontological entities. The paper elaborates the concept of situational stances and their function, as well as the outlines of a dynamic situation ontology that helps to understand the way human beings find themselves dynamically immersed in situations, alone and with others. The last part of the paper then analyzes possible consequences and risks of considering the peculiarities of this specific situationality of human cognition in social robotics and AI.

Im Umgang mit dem, was geschieht, lassen sich grundsätzlich zwei Weisen unterscheiden: Einer offenen, irritationsfreudigen Umgangsweise steht eine Erlebensweise gegenüber, die eher dazu neigt, Erlebtes zu vereindeutigen, mit ihm so schnell wie möglich fertig zu werden, es möglichst schnell möglichst abschließend zu begreifen. Während eine Person, die ersterem zuneigt, etwa einen in alltäglicher Konversation geäußerten Satz daraufhin abklopft, welche Über- und Hintersinne noch mit ihm angespielt und ausgesagt sein könnten, ob das, was sie zu hören meinte, auch wirklich das ist, was gemeint war, weiß jemand, der eher letzterem zugeneigt ist, meist recht schnell recht genau, was sie oder er gehört hat, was das wohl zu bedeuten und wie man damit weiter zu verfahren hat. Während erstere dabei Gefahr läuft, die Welt durch Vervieldeutigung unnötig zu verkomplizieren, die Geschmeidigkeit der alltäglichen Gesprächs- und Interaktionsmechanik durch unnötige Rückfragen, Fremd- und Selbstirritationen zum Stocken zu bringen, läuft letztere Gefahr, sich – für sich selbst unbemerkt – in einer verarmten Welt einzurichten, an der viele, von anderen registrierte Phänomene durch vorschnelle Vereindeutigung einfach unregistriert vorbeigleiten.

(Deutsch:) Es werden zunächst drei Hinsichten unterschieden, nach denen die in einer Situation offenstehenden Möglichkeiten vorstrukturiert erscheinen: materiell, sozial und subjektiv. Während in materieller Hinsicht Möglichkeiten schlicht vorgegeben sind, werden Möglichkeiten gesellschaftlich als zulässig oder unzulässig skandiert, d.i. hervorgehoben, oder bleiben unskandiert. In subjektiver Hinsicht sind es vor allem die Fähigkeiten des Einzelnen, die diese Möglichkeiten er- oder verschließen. Technisierung erscheint in dieser Perspektive als sichernde Vorstrukturierung von Möglichkeitsräumen, die subjektiv stets mit der Abblendung oder Abschattung bestimmter Sachverhalte und Möglichkeiten, der Erzeugung einer Zone der Latenz, einhergeht. Wie aus emanzipatorischer Perspektive mit dieser Dynamik umzugehen ist, ist Thema des letzten Abschnitts. (English:) At the beginning of the text, I distinguish between three respects in which the options and possibilities within a given situation are prestructured: materially, socially, and subjectively. While certain options and possibilities are simply predetermined by the physical structure of a situation, many options are socially accentuated (skandiert) as admissible or inadmissible, while other options remain unaccented. With respect to the subject, options are primarily made accessible and disclosed through the particular capabilities of the agent. From such a point of view, mechanization (Technisierung) can be described as the safe-guarding prestructuring of spaces of possibility, which is always linked with the fading of certain circumstances and possibilities, the establishment of a domain of latency. How to cope with this dynamic from an emancipatory perspective is the subject of the last section of the paper.

Menschen sind häufig nicht ganz bei der Sache. Oft finden wir sie abwesend, nicht ganz da, sich in Tagträume verlierend, in Gedanken schon bei der nächsten Sache; finden sie irgendwie nicht ganz hinein in die Situationen, mit denen sie sich gerade konfrontiert finden. Der Beitrag entwickelt die These, dass die Rede von der "Immersivität" von Erfahrung nicht erst bei technologisch oder ästhetisch mediierten Erlebnissen des Versetztseins in künstliche oder virtuelle "Welten" und Umgebungen am Platz, gewöhnliche menschliche Erfahrung vielmehr ganz grundsätzlich durch eine immersive Dynamik des Hineinfindens in und Hinausgeratens aus Situationen charakterisiert ist: Noch bevor wir uns ein bewusstes Bild konkreter Umstände und Möglichkeiten gemacht haben, finden wir uns gewöhnlich schon in Situationen verortet. Diese zeichnen bestimmte Rhythmen und Richtungen, Valenzen und Tendenzen, Bedeutsamkeiten und Möglichkeiten vor. Der Beitrag skizziert eine Phänomenologie der Immersion, die auch ein tieferes Verständnis technologisch oder ästhetisch mediierter Immersionserfahrungen verspricht.

Der Aufsatz untersucht, inwiefern der Sprache in der Phänomenologie die Rolle zukommt, das Individuum deiktisch in den Situationen seiner Existenz zu orientieren, indem sie kategorial auf Gegebenheiten seiner Erfahrung zeigt. Phänomenologisches Philosophieren geht in dieser Hinsicht über das bloße, innertheoretische Geben und Nehmen von Gründen sowie die Absicherung objektiver Wissensbestände (zu denen es gleichfalls nicht in Opposition tritt) hinaus, und zielt dabei evokativ auf orientierende Erkenntniseffekte im Subjekt. Statt als innersprachliche "Deskriptionen" oder Bezeichnungen von Phänomenen fungieren phänomenologische Begriffe und Beschreibungen als verbale Zeigegesten, die dem Individuum im erfolgreichen Fall die bezeigten (und in diesem Sinne "be-deuteten") Phänomene selbst vor Augen führen.

This paper presents an alternative model to the rule-following model of social practices and draws implications for the possibility of integrating robots into the social realm. We differentiate between “maximally loose” and “maximally rigid” forms of social practices and show that especially the latter pose a problem for social robotics. Not only is it a technical challenge to enable robots to function like human agents in loose practices, but it can also lead to normative problems. Namely, on the one hand, social robots may cause loose social practices to become too rigid; on the other hand, they present us with the problem that we would have to recognize robots as co-authors of our social practices or even as persons.

In this chapter, I sketch a philosophical framework of shared and diverging worlds and cultural significance. Although the framework proposed is basically a psychologically informed, philosophical approach, it is explicitly aimed at being applicable for agent-based social simulations. The account consists of three parts: (1) a formal ontology of human worlds, (2) an analysis of the pre-semantic significance of the objects of human worlds, and (3) an account of what it means for agents to share a world (or to live in diverging worlds). In this chapter, I will give a brief and concise summary of my account. At the end, I will briefly outline how the proposed framework might be put to use for multiagent social simulation of complex social interaction scenarios involving diverging (cultural) backgrounds.

We argue against the view that human behavior is the benchmark of robotic performance for every kind of social interaction. To the contrary, it is rather human agents who, in what we call ‘functional social interactions,’ aim at simulating social automatons. An important aspect of this simulation is the agent’s attempt to suppress every indication of the existence of a difference between what she experiences from the “‘I’-perspective” and what is perceived by other agents, the “‘me’-perspective”. Although experiencing this difference is not needed for realizing functional interaction it is, however, needed for what we call “close interhuman relationships”.

Based on Husserl’s distinction between mode of living presence (Modus der Leibhaftigkeit) and mode of certainty (Glaubensmodus der Gewißheit), which coincide in normal univocal perception, the paper argues for a distinction between two different types of accordance (Einstimmigkeit) in perceptual experience – local accordance and global accordance. While local accordance is characterized by the unfolding of appearances in agreement with lines of accordance instituted by recent perceptual apprehensions within a certain spatio-temporal domain, global accordance is characterized by the agreement between appearances unfolding in local accordance with previous and simultaneous apprehensions concerning the spatio-temporal surroundings of this domain. As will be shown, to perceive something in local accordance amounts to perceiving it in the mode of living presence, while to perceive something in global accordance amounts to perceiving it in the belief mode of certainty (relative to a certain surrounding). In light of these considerations, an account of the perception of figments and immersion is put forward which does not invoke make-belief or the idea of an as-if-perception.

Current theories of emotions and emotional machines often assume too homogeneous a conception of what emotions are in terms of whether they are experienced as one's own emotions (“internal” emotions) or whether they are perceived as the emotions of other agents (“external” emotions). In contrast, this paper argues, first, that an answer to the question of whether machines can possess emotions requires such a distinction—the distinction between internal emotions-had and external emotions-perceived. Second, it argues that the emotions we perceive in other agents can be explicated as indicators of likely imminent paths or patterns of behavior of those agents. As will be shown, perceiving emotions in others does not necessarily involve the ontological attribution of corresponding emotions-had to the subject which is perceived as exhibiting a particular emotion-perceived. Thus, it will be shown that we can, for example, perceive an agent as angry without (ontologically) attributing anger (as an emotion-had) to that agent. If we apply this reasoning to emotional robots, it follows that there is no deception involved in perceiving a robot as exhibiting a particular emotion, as long as its behavior realizes and continues to realize the behavioral form of that external emotion-perceived. Thus, a robot’s behavior can fully instantiate emotions-perceived. In order to elaborate these claims, the presented view will be contrasted with Gibson’s conception of “affordances.” The final section discusses whether these considerations might have broader implications for our view of human perception in general.

Can machines simulate, express or even have emotions? Is it a good to build such machines? How do humans react emotionally to them and how should such devices be treated from a moral point of view? This volume addresses these and related questions by bringing together perspectives from affective computing and emotional human-machine interaction, combining technological approaches with those from the humanities and social sciences. It thus relates disciplines such as philosophy, computer science, technology, psychology, sociology, design, and art. The volume offers readers interested in the phenomenon of emotional machines new perspectives from a variety of disciplines and addresses fundamental questions that will become pressing in the foreseeable future as emotional machines increasingly populate our everyday lives.

Dass wir alle in einer gemeinsamen Wirklichkeit leben, setzen wir meist unhinterfragt voraus. Sehen Andere die Welt dann doch einmal anders, mag es uns scheinen, als sähen sie diese einfach nicht so, wie sie wirklich ist. Schwerer fällt uns anzuerkennen, dass andere zuweilen in ganz anderen Wirklichkeiten unterwegs sind als wir selbst. – Tom Poljanšek zeigt, wie sich die Vorstellung einer Pluralität menschlicher Wirklichkeiten mit der Annahme einer wahrnehmungsunabhängigen Realität vereinbaren lässt, ohne sich in einen Relativismus der vielen Wirklichkeiten zu verlaufen. In Auseinandersetzung mit »kontinentalen« und »analytischen« Ansätzen legt er eine elegante Theorie menschlicher Wirklichkeiten vor, die konstruktivistische und realistische, phänomenologische und naturalistische Motive unerwartet miteinander verbindet.

There are several ways to look at technical objects and at human-machine interaction with regard to emotions and emotional bonding. Some research deals with machines’ ability to detect emotions in humans, some with a technical object’s options to signal emotions in a way understandable to living beings, some with how to alter human emotions with machinic help, some with the pragmatics or ethics of such endeavours. Philosophers, psychologists, and producers of machines may try to argue for or against the usefulness of technical objects ‘becoming emotional’ (i.e., to process signs of a living being’s emotions or produce signals of emotion understandable to living agents) and explore hypothetically and empirically the consequences of machinic emotion simulation. Social psychologists may study emotional attachment to or acceptancy of machines, designers may try to find ways to build technical objects according to the desired emotional impact on a human. All throughout this, discussions about human-machine relations often concentrate on positive emotions linked to the possibility of friendship, companionship, or human acceptance of machines. Where anger, hate, disappointment, indifference, or curiosity as a source of generally hostile or corrective behaviour towards technical systems are of concern this is often in a context of ‘robot abuse’ (Brscić et al. 2015), robot rights (Gunkel 2018), or in contexts in which authors argue that machines are morally considerable entities either in themselves (Ryland 2021), or, from a point of view of virtue ethics, because of the impact a human beings’ behaviour towards inanimate objects has on the human beings’ character (Coeckelbergh 2021, also cp. Ess in this volume). To add another perspective with regard to the question of how human beings relate to inanimate objects, in this contribution we will specifically analyse the merit of expressing frustration-related emotions towards technical systems in terms of aiming at the goal of a ‘good life’. To this end, we sketch how frustration expression is involved in other interactions (human-human, human-world), we theoretically grasp the frustration-related concepts of ‘trust’, cognitive and normative ‘expectation’ and refer to attributed autonomy along the way, analyse the usefulness of frustration-related emotion expression towards technical objects with and without sociosensitive and socioactive functions, and point to some arguments for and against the use of such functions.

Since the late nineteenth century ‘Scientific Philosophy’ has become a label ascribed to many research programs. German theoretical philosophy of the early twentieth century was dominated by three different trends—Phenomenology, Neo-Kantianism, and Logical Empiricism: Each trend claimed to represent the ‘Scientific Philosophy’. In this context it is astonishing that we know almost nothing about the relationships between these schools. It is true, all of them rejected the speculative metaphysics found, for example, in German Idealism, but knowledge about other connections is scarce. Starting with the question what exactly ‘Scientific Philosophy’ means and how these meanings relate to each other, a thorough investigation of the connections between all three trends has yet to take place.The main goal of the conference was, therefore, to better understand the relationships of these schools through their notions of ‘Scientific Philosophy’.
