Coastal engagement activities have been explored for their measurable health benefits, including both physical and mental health outcomes. These activities may foster a deeper sense of connection to nature following every visit to the coast, such as watching the sunset, beach walking, spending time on the beach, wildlife spotting, shell collecting, engaging in beach and water sports, mountain biking, and participating in seagoing activities. However, limited research has examined the moderating effect of nature connectedness on the relationship between these activities and health outcomes, both physically and mentally. This study aimed to analyse how the relationships between coastal activities and perceived mental and general health conditions in the previous year are moderated by the level of nature connectedness among adult visitors. By analyzing the dataset of 1,939 Flemish individuals engaged in the Belgian coast, under the Bayesian Mindsponge Framework (BMF), this study found a crucial moderating role of coastal nature connectedness. Findings showed that coastal activities are negatively associated with mental and general health scores, but with the moderating effect of nature connectedness, this negative association may shift. In each level of nature connectedness, coastal activities showed different effects on mental and general health conditions, with higher improvement found in mental health scores. Findings indicate that, beyond the type of coastal activities, nature connectedness is an essential subjective sense that determines therapeutic benefits. This study highlights the complex interplay of environmental factors, subjective perceptions, and biophysical-psychological interactions in shaping individual health outcomes. There is a need for targeted coastal management strategies to facilitate nature-based activities that promote nature-connectedness and, subsequently, coastal healing capabilities.

Research over the past four decades has built a convincing case that co-speech hand gestures play a powerful role in human cognition. However, this recent focus on the cognitive function of gesture has, to a large extent, overlooked its emotional role—a role that was once central to research on bodily expression. In the present review, we first give a brief summary of the wealth of research demonstrating the cognitive function of co-speech gestures in language acquisition, learning, and thinking. Building on this foundation, we revisit the emotional function of gesture across a wide range of communicative contexts, from clinical to artistic to educational, and spanning diverse fields, from cognitive neuroscience to linguistics to affective science. Bridging the cognitive and emotional functions of gesture highlights promising avenues of research that have varied practical and theoretical implications for human–machine interactions, therapeutic interventions, language evolution, embodied cognition, and more.

Despite growing corporate commitments to being customer-centric, many customers perceive firms as self-driven and caring only about their own business interests. This sentiment is projected in consumer cynicism, or negative consumer attitudes based on the disbelief in the sincerity of firms' motives and actions. We argue that consumer cynicism emerges in response to negative marketplace situations, such as service and product failures. Across four scenario-based experiments and one video-based experiment, our research examines cynicism as a key mediator, transmitting the effect of double deviation (i.e., a failure in delivery and in subsequent recovery) on negative electronic word-of-mouth and repurchase intention. We further demonstrate that consumer cynicism can be minimized when the provider uses cocreated recovery (i.e., engages consumers in recovery) even if the recovery fails and when the provider offers a strong empathetic apology (either before or after recovery failure). Our research contributes to consumer and service recovery research by highlighting an important but overlooked role of consumer cynicism in the context of double deviation. We also offer managerial insights into cocreation and empathetic apologies as cost-effective recovery strategies to minimize cynicism.
