Virginia Woolf’s *On Being Ill* laments literature’s inability to represent bodily illness and the “poverty” of language before pain. This essay argues that Woolf’s apparent failure to convey the physical sensations of sickness is generative precisely in its deficiency. Although her prose does not accomplish its stated task of rendering embodied illness, this inability opens another possibility: a movement from direct representation toward poetic evocation. Engaging Elaine Scarry and Lucy Bending on the linguistic inexpressibility of pain, the essay shows how Woolf’s rhythm, imagery, cadence, and associative movement produce an altered mode of consciousness in which readers apprehend meanings that discursive language cannot state. Read alongside Heidegger’s account of poetic disclosure, *On Being Ill* emerges as an aesthetic form of mysticism: illness interrupts habitual perception, exposes the finitude of embodied existence, and opens a clearing in which Being may be felt beyond conceptual mastery. Woolf fails to reproduce illness as bodily experience but succeeds in revealing the existential “sickness” of incarnation and the transcendent possibilities generated by language’s limits.
