How to understand educational critique and how to best promote it in educational contexts is subject to continued debate. In a seminal article, Burbules and Berk describe how the disputes between proponents of ‘critical thinking’, ‘critical pedagogy’, and various later notions of ‘critique’ often focus on highlighting the foundational inadequacies of other approaches. This may suggest that different critical traditions are mutually exclusive to the point that productive interaction is precluded. To avoid this, we take cue from and elaborate on Burbules and Berk’s sketch of criticality as a practice, rather than a mere intellectual and theoretical task. We propose that understanding criticality as an ongoing practice and as an experienced process helps bring together some of the key components of the different traditions. To incorporate practitioners of different traditions also in making our argument, we connect the ideas of Gilles Deleuze from French poststructuralism and John Dewey from the pragmatist tradition. We argue that there is a common set of problems in the practice of criticality that touches all traditions, but which they have sought to address with different emphases.

The article contributes to the academic discussion on Paulo Freire’s pedagogical thinking as a basis for reinventing contemporary non-formal education. In Finland, Freire’s transformational/liberatory theory of adult learning was applied as a framework for developing an adult educational model called Life Skills for All. The pilot project’s case studies were carried out with different groups of people during the model’s development phase. We describe these cases and discuss what can be learned from them for offering basic and life skills education for adult groups at risk of social disenfranchisement. Our case study analysis highlights some new practices and challenges based on the model’s different applications. We argue that even for basic capacity building of employment skills, it is essential to develop a non-instrumental, holistic, and societal educational approach. Elements for such an approach can be derived from both the Nordic and Freirean traditions of adult education. Also, we suggest that the Life Skills for All model benefits learners’ agency and empowerment by putting the learner at the center, combining the learning of different basic skills, and emphasizing the central role of the local community in participants’ learning activities.

El primer propósito de este artículo es proporcionar una visión general de la historia del campo finlandés de la filosofía con niñxs, describiendo cómo estas ideas han cruzado fronteras hacia Finlandia a través de diversas rutas y en diferentes momentos. Además, ofrezco una visión sinóptica de la situación actual en Finlandia. En segundo lugar, examinaré la división dentro del sistema escolar finlandés entre la enseñanza en el aula en la escuela primaria y la enseñanza de asignaturas en la escuela secundaria. Esta línea divisoria ha obstaculizado el reconocimiento del potencial de filosofar con niños y jóvenes en las escuelas. Esta distinción es evidente en que los maestros de aula se sienten inseguros acerca de su competencia filosófica, mientras que los maestros de asignaturas con una sólida formación disciplinaria en filosofía se sienten inadecuados en sus habilidades de interacción educativa y dialógica. En tercer lugar, inspirado por John Dewey, justifico por qué esta frontera entre educación y filosofía, por así decirlo, debe entenderse como artificial. Desde una perspectiva deweyana, también argumento que la práctica de filosofar pedagógicamente puede considerarse una práctica clave en la llamada reconstrucción pedagógica de la filosofía, ya sea en la enseñanza en el aula o en la enseñanza de asignaturas. Finalmente, concluyo con sugerencias sobre cómo el enfoque de la comunidad de investigación filosófica mejoraría la educación (académica) de maestros y beneficiaría tanto las competencias básicas de los maestros como sus capacidades para filosofar en las escuelas.
